Where to buy DEF

All the places selling DEF now, we should start a poll/chart is to where we can purchase good high quality DEF with minimal problems to our vehicles. I know some say "get it from the dealer" but Mopar does not make DEF. They purchase it from the lowest bidder in bulk. Anyone else interested knowing where people are getting this stuff with the least amount of problems? Thanks.

Re: Where to buy DEF

I have yet to hear of "good" or "bad" DEF...I get mine at the pump at a local truck stop (Flying J, I believe). MUCH cheaper than by-the-gallon off a shelf somewhere.

Re: Where to buy DEF

Here in Wisconsin I have purchased exclusively from Kwik Trip fueling stations. Zero problems with - filling or quality. Last time I bought 2 gallons I paid $2.68 per gallon.

Re: Where to buy DEF

We have a few diesel vehicles at work which require DEF. I just purchased another 55 gallon drum from Napa. I will try it in the Jeep and see if it throws an CEL's. Its worked great for the GMC and BlueTec Sprinters. I think its 22214 certified.

Re: Where to buy DEF

It's crazy to hear of people not having problems. All I've heard about is problems with the DEF system. Will most likely fill at Kwik Trip in western Wisconsin or South Eastern Minn. Thanks for the help. I'm just under a half a tank with 5,000 miles on the OD. The only fill was new at Dealership(said 3/4 on readout at full.)

If you have half a tank of DEF, and 5000 miles on your odometer, you'll probably get another 5000 miles out of the remaining DEF fluid. The tank only holds 8 gallons of DEF, and at three quarters, you had 6 gallons in the tank. I never keep mine or fill mine past the three-quarter mark.

This looks like the ticket. It's a PRIME product to boot.

Amazon.com: BlueDEF DEF002 Diesel Exhaust Fluid - 2.5 Gallon Jug: Automotive
Looks good, provided it is ordered in the spring or fall (or in the South). In the winter or summer, ground shipping and porch delivery seems like it could be a bad idea. Hm, I suppose how and when it was shipped to the Amazon warehouse is also a concern (did it bake in a trailer for days on its way from the factory to the warehouse; did it sit around and freeze during shipment?)

From here:
Quote:
"To ensure product stability, DEF producers, buyers, retailers and users should store the fluid at temperatures between 12°F-86°F (10°C-30°C). Doing so ensures a DEF shelf-life of at least one (1) year. Storage temperatures higher than 86°F will detrimentally affect urea concentration and below 12 ° F, DEF will begin to crystallize. Both of these circumstances could render the product out of specification and unfit for sale."
Our DEF tank has a heater to try to prevent this crystallization/freezing, and obviously our Jeeps don't choke and die when there are temperature excursions from this range. However, I'm trying to play it as safely as possible at least until this whole P20EE debacle is fully elucidated.

I haven't tried this type of DEF yet, but the manufacturer of Air1 claims to audit their DEF distribution network to ensure quality (whatever that means, but it sounds good). I might grab a couple of gallons from one of their distribution stations in the next few weeks and report back.

I live in Los Angeles so I don't have a porch as much as a nice, climate-controlled PO Box. Amazon PRIME customers enjoy 2-day delivery on this product. Finally, unless they invent a kit to spot "acid-test" DEF for quality (like the bad-guy's test the heroin in movies) you really can't tell what going into the tank, can you?

Yep, that's the problem. So, this is about risk mitigation, especially given that another forum member has already had his DEF system warranty voided over "contaminated DEF".

My perspective is that DEF from a well-maintained dispensing system at a high-volume truck stop is likely to be the freshest and to have experienced the best storage conditions (underground storage tanks should be very thermally stable). This is also contingent upon the dispenser being clean and well maintained; the one I have used before had the DEF pump filler in an enclosed storage cabinet.

Given that DEF refills are such a rare occurrence, I would be willing to drive out of my way to get the "best" DEF. That air1 manufacturer claiming they "audit" the distribution network system seems promising, and I'm willing to check it out. I'm currently down to <20% on my DEF tank, so if the truck stop place looks good I'll grab a few gallons to bring my tank back to 1/3 or so.

I have Prime as well, but I wouldn't feel the urge to order it from Amazon—especially without seeing the date code on the box. Maybe after others report back that their Amazon-shipped DEF is all freshly made and hasn't been sitting in some (climate-controlled? maybe?) warehouse for a long time...

Re: Where to buy DEF

I buy mine at Sams when it's in stock but they can't seem to keep it on the shelves. $10.5X for the peak 2.5 gallon jug.
