Re: Whistling/whining noise when engine running

Mines doing the whistling on trailing throttle above 70kph now - on a full tank!
Haven't heard the whine while idling and at low speed recently - maybe just getting used to it. But I'll check again later today.

Re: Whistling/whining noise when engine running

To me , mine sounds like an electrical harmonic type sound. Or like static. Idk. Strange to me. Can't pin point it

Forgive the seemingly silly question this far into the thread, but you're not all just talking about the sound a turbo makes as it spins up, are you? Do these cars have any way to display a boost gauge? If so, does it correspond with boost?

For sure not turbo. Well at least mine! It comes from around my go fast pedal.

There have been two whistling noises described here. As they apply to my car, one is a light whistling noise, which isn't there every day, but when it is, it is there all the time the engine is running, whether the car is moving or not. It is there up to at least 60kph when it is drowned out by road noise.
The other problem may be related to the turbo, in that it happens with a trailing throttle above about 70kph.
In both cases, the pitch and volume of the sound is constant - independent of engine and road speed. The "trailing throttle" noise could be an air leak when there is a high vacuum in the manifold - perhaps a loose turbo hose or vacuum line. If it is related to boost, it is low boost. I don't know of a way of monitoring boost though.
Thanks,
Russell

I can hear it the most strongly when I put my ear near the left rear wheel well, which inclines me to believe that it's either a fuel pump or the DEF pump. I've driven turbos for years. Definitely not the sound of the turbo spooling up. Not coming from the engine compartment.

Re: Whistling/whining noise when engine running

I can't pick the left rear wheel well as the main area, but I do suspect the fuel pump area, as it started immediately after I had the fuel filters replaced.

Re: Whistling/whining noise when engine running

$30 bucks for an OBD2 to Bluetooth adapter and Torque App for your smartphone...you can see boost with that, and a whole lot more. It will read and reset codes and has custom graphical guage screen for monitoring.

Mine has a noise almost identical to what has been described. I believe it is coming from the electric assist steering pump.

So, sounds like it's coming from the engine compartment?
