It's a generic ELM327 based adapter like all the other cheap ones...but IT WORKS. I followed the recommendation of other Jeep Garage mwmbers and it was a solid suggestion:

Re: Whistling/whining noise when engine running

Anyone ever figure out exactly what is causing this? I started experiencing this today after picking up from the dealer (only service work done was TSB 18-018-14)

I have not had a resolution to either of the noises (referred to in post 17). The one there whenever the engine is running has quietened down to the point I cannot see the service guys hearing it enough to agree it's a problem. The whine when lifting off is intermittent, and never there when I have the opportunity to take the car in!
Thanks,
Russell

Here's a totally uninformed idea about this noise (since I don't have my car yet). Is this problem only on the cars with Off Road Adventure Package? If so, is it possibly related to the pneumatic system that adjusts the suspension? It sure could be related to a high pressure air pump or leak - altho I have no idea why the pump would be operating except when a change in height is called for.

The air ride pump sounds like the typical small 12v portable emergency inflator. The system is sealed. If there where any leaks, it would run often...even when parked, to make up for lost height.

Re: Whistling/whining noise when engine running

I don't have the air shocks and mine makes the noise intermittently. As someone on this thread mentioned awhile back, it seems as though it happens most often when I'm under a 1/4 tank of fuel. I usually hear at lower speeds or idle but the sound doesn't vary with RPM's. It's hard to replicate when necessary, so I haven't been able to consult with dealer.

Re: Whistling/whining noise when engine running

I have the whistle sound as well. Mine goes away when warm. What I find interesting is that this engine is so quiet to what I was used to that my previous rides you would never hear this whistle ever.
As far as I'm concerned it isn't doing any harm and will just leave things alone...

That's probably what I will end up doing too - nothing. My concern was not so much the whistle per se, but that it started immediately after a service. Which may have been a coincidence of course.
Of more concern actually, is the whistle on the overrun, as it definitely sounds like air being suck in some where it maybe shouldn't be.
Thanks,
Russell

PlayGolf, others on this forum have reported on iPhone apps that work (or don't). I think they use a WiFi to OBD2 adapter with theirs. I doubt that adapter is $20 but might still be reasonable.

Alternately, ask your friends if they have an old Android phone they would donate or sell cheap. Anything less than 3 years old should be fine. That's what I have and it's nice to be able to dedicate it to the task.

Yes - actually, the folks at BAFX said the same one you have works with some Windsows 8 phones (what I have); and, I've already located a used Android for free. I do like the idea of having a dedicated phone just for that, as you said. Thanks.
