Whistling/whining noise when engine running

My 2014 Overland has developed a very quiet whistle when the engine is running - but it is independent of engine speed. It is noticeable up to about 30kph when it gets drowned out by road noise.
It sounds like an air whistle, or maybe a pump of some sort, although the frequency seems a bit high for that.
The car has done about 30,000 km, and I first noticed it after the 30,000km service.
The noise is there most, but not all, of the time, and I think only when the engine has warmed up.
I'll take it back to the dealer, but because it is pretty quiet, I'm not confident they'll have a clue what it is, so thought I'd look here for ideas first!
All suggestions welcome....

I am hearing it too. It's just loud enough to be unsettling. Very high pitch. Try getting out of your vehicle and put your ear near the right rear wheel well with the engine running. Do you still hear it? If so, it might be the DEF or fuel pump.

they all sound like that, I'm guessing you notice it most during light throttle.

I'll do that - it is probably loudest near the rear of the car.

It is odd that it just started though, and it loud enough that I would have noticed it before. The throttle makes no difference except in so far as the engine noise eventually drowns it out as more throttle is applied.

I'm noticing the same things. It is recent for me as well. It seems to be less frequent if the fuel tank is full, and recurs more frequently as the tank empties. I'm thinking it might be the fuel pump.

Fuel pump is a clue. Mine started immediately after a service, at which both fuel filters were replaced. If I can figure out where they are, I'll see if they appear to be fiTed OK. Maybe the pump is sucking air or something. At the moment it is happening with the tank nearly full.

Re: Whistling/whining noise when engine running

You might try re-priming the fuel pump. Seemed to help with mine, although I don't know if it actually did something or it was just a coincidence. In any event, it's easy and you're not out anything to try. With the engine off, and your foot off the accelerator, push the ignition button twice to the run position. Leave it there for about 30 seconds until the fuel pump shuts off. Turn it off. Repeat two more times. Fuel pump is primed. It's the same procedure in the owners manual for when you run out of gas and need to prime the fuel pump after refueling.

Re: Whistling/whining noise when engine running

Well, I did the priming of the fuel pump as described. Unfortunately no change.
