Why? DEF only filled to 75% on Dealer Servicings @10K & 20K

That's twice now, I just pick it up after the 20K servicing (at the same dealer) and the DEF has only been filled to about 75-80%. They did this at 10K too.

I'm going to call them tomorrow and have them top it up, but, is there some reason why they wouldn't top it up fully? Are they being lazy?

My dealer did the same thing when the vehicle was new. I thought maybe they only filled it to 75% here in Wisconsin because of expansion in the winter months. That wouldn't be the case for you in California. Who knows.

Only filling the DEF tank to about 75% full is what the dealers have been instructed to do by FCA.

DEF will freeze below a certain temp so you do want some room for expansion. The other reason is shelf life... the hotter it is, the shorter its life is.

I don't think I've ever read anyone recommending to fill the tank completely.

That's interesting, okay and thanks, but then when I bought my rig the DEF was completely full - 100% on the gauge.

Seems to be a contradiction there.

Granted, I'm near San Francisco where the temps are very moderate year-round.

I keep mine lower... When it gets down below 25 ... In the 15% area... I add 2.5 gallons... It does not seem to use as much as it did new... Early build with 29,000 miles now. DEF stays fresh.

When I went in for service, they said they don't add DEF. "It's like gasoline, we don't add that fluid, that's your responsibility..." Blah blah blah. Dealers!

Re: Why? DEF only filled to 75% on Dealer Servicings @10K & 20K

Yesterday the service adviser said it's tricky to fill the DEF tank. It reads full, but then the fluid settles and it's not full. This must be what happened.

OK, don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger. This is what he said. No talk about temperature limits. Anyway he said to come by and they'll top it up. Just like they did 10,000 miles ago. I'll start doing what some of you guys are doing, adding some (2.5gals) DEF every 3-5k miles or so.

Your service adviser is correct. The sensor in the DEF tank is an ultrasonic level transducer and almost has a life of its own. Sometimes it responds quickly, sometimes it takes a while to settle, sometimes it just gets stuck for a while. I've been theorizing that DEF crystallization at the top of the tank and at the sensor element contribute to this behavior.

Yes! You are correct !

I use truck stop DEF and if you do a regular fill, it stops but shows 75%.
However, if you SLOWLY add more DEF to it, it will accept thee extra 2 gallons to fill 'er right up.

Had that issue a couple of times but sussed it out on the 4th attempt!

My dealer filled the DEF till it spilled out because it was reading about 80%. He didn't know why it wouldn't register 100%. The next day, it showed 100%. Give it a little time. It's a Jeep thing

Well it's been over a week and it's still reading 75%, so I think it has settled there. Good to know about the delayed readings.

Closing the loop here: took it back last week and they topped it up for free. It's at 100% now.
