Probably best to ask a reliable source--say Fox News. :-)

Re: Scary - Jeep Hacked!

As I read it from multiple sources, these guys took a year to hi-jack one 2014 Jeep Cherokee. They can't just walk, or drive up to any Jeep and do it at will. They had to know a lot about that single car. In spite of that it still took them a year to pull it off.

It took NASA over a decade to go to the Moon. They did it successfully many times after that. That doesn't mean if they decided to go back tomorrow, they could leave on Saturday.

However, if your have the In-car WiFi hot spot turn on all the time, hacker will have direct access to your car instead of going to find your IP on the Sprint network.

Yep, the key to the hack is being able to modify the uconnect firmware to allow access to the CAN bus. If you can prevent remote updates to the firmware then they can't perform the hack (upload the hacked firmware) without a physical connection to inside the car.

And as you say, I'd expect a lot of prep work went into getting the firmware onto the car for this story, I'm not sure it would be achievable in real life for a moving car. Perhaps if it is parked, left running and with good signal while the upload takes place. Then once the firmware is in place, and they know the IP Address of the uconnect system, they can do what they like. But its a bit of work to get that far.

The ability to scan the sprint network for uconnect systems and get VIN, Model and GPS data is a worry, that doesn't seem to require any changes to the system firmware. I'd hope they are fixing that too.

Yep, thats a good point, but you would need to remain close to the car and have it remain turned on/or running while you uploaded the firmware. Might look a bit suspicious standing next to a running car with your laptop out.....

Only the first of many security patches im sure, as long as there is a connection sitting out there someone will always find a different way in.

Re: Scary - Jeep Hacked!

The only hot spot in my Jeep is my cell phone and it does not communicate with the CAN-BUS, the permantly mounted tablet is the one running Torque.

I do not understand this desire for more and more Internet services, just one I carry with me is enough.
