The patch they refer to as having helped Chrysler create is the latest Uconnect update for MY14 and MY15....obviously the reason it was also released as a required RRT TSB....anything connected can b hacked, period.

As these vehicles become more and more computer dependent, expect more of this. We are not far away from the police having the ability to disable any modern, late model vehicle they choose. Every car will be a "Bait Car". It's only a matter of time. If you can start your car with your phone 100 miles away, it only stands to reason a cop will have the ability to stop it.

re: Scary - Jeep Hacked!

Does the patch is essentially a new version of Uconnect? Are they offer this to 2014 models or just 2015 like they have been doing recently.

Look I am not trying to be a fear monger, but it wont be long before malicious hackers start having "fun" by messing with people's cars. I can remember when people thought that computer viruses were a non issue Today, almost every computer has been attacked. I can guarantee that we will start seeing more and security updates being issued. They are going to need a better way to disseminate them, as the current method is a bit of a hassle, and many folks are not going to bother with them.

This is somewhat true, but please remember that today's computers are infinitely more complex than the software that is being used in cars at this point. Complexity is what often brings out the holes and bugs in software. In addition, the testing and training of both the software and developers is usually of a far higher standard than code that is not "mission critical" or life threatning etc. So yes, the always-on connectivity of cars can bring risks of remote hacking, but that is also mitigated somewhat by more rigorous standards and testing. We will not all need to install anti-virus software in our cars.

re: Scary - Jeep Hacked!

Reminds me of those recent stories of someone claiming to have been able to control the Boeing aircraft that he was flying on through the cabins inflight entertainment system.

I beg to differ. The Computer and Complexity in the Jeep is quite complex.
One thing that is helping though is, that it's a closed system so it won't have apps from 3rd parties that could add vulnerables.

I also don't agree that developers on this system are any better trained than say those who write things like IE. In fact I'd say the folks that write IE are better trained in security vulnerabilities than UConnect folks.

And I suspect there is very little security down at the Can-Bus level.

Once they gained access to Can-Bus, they had everything that is on Can-Bus.
