Volkswagen Reportedly Interested In Acquiring Fiat.

Ruhroh. TTAC just cited a German business publication that reported VW is interested in buying Fiat.

What do you Jeepers (and insiders/employees) think about a possible VW takeover? "Good to go" or "heck no!"

Re: Volkswagen Reportedly Interested In Acquiring Fiat.

So VW would own Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Maserati, Alfa, Audi, Bugatti, and Ducati? oh, and yes, Jeep.

They DO have manufacturing capacity, and to some minds, just a tad better quality control concepts.

Yeah. If I remember right from the article, the Fiat owners would keep Ferrari.

The Chrysler brands are just now getting over the damage inflicted by Daimler.

Yeah, although it is possible that Bentley, etc. MAY be doing better under German rule, I worked for a company bought by a large German organization. Every creative mind in the company left within a couple months. And, yes, I do recall the Mercedes years for Chrysler. Possibly the aero suspension on the GC was one of the few good things to happen to Jeep during that era, but In My Non-Humble Opinion, about the only thing.

Re: Volkswagen Reportedly Interested In Acquiring Fiat.

Having owned a few VWs my question would be what type overreach would they have on the product.

I would love to be able to use the VCDS software on a future jeep that way we could manipulate some of the features in our cars.

Okay that was me being selfish.....

Okay really Volkswagen branded vehicles have their own share of electrical gremlins and under engineered parts so I don't see much of difference in the overall scheme of things. Some of the interiors that they are known for seem to have expiration dates on them after a certain age they begin to fall apart. As a matter of fact that is most German cars these days.

It may help with appeal down to road if they made huge strides by inserting some VW dna but Chrylser is finding its way slowly so I hope it continues on the upswing and does get watered down by a sale to the wrong buyer.

I love the fact that chrysler can whip up a concept car in short work and bring it to market in a relatively short time.

if the purchase did take place I think the global products would change and it wouldn't be until sometime down that road that platform sharing would be a benefit to the chrysler brand.

Could you imagine future models such as the 200 and Passat based off of the same platform, Possible but that would lead to the same top heavy make up that Ford and GM and even Chrysler did that caused them to shed some brands from the line up.

You are not wrong. The German cash-for-clunkers scheme cuts in after 9 years so why would they design anything to last longer.

I may be the exception, only bought the 2012 and now the 2014 Grand Cherokee for its shared platform with the Mercedes M-Class. The ride and low noise levels are great.
Fiat or VW, to me that's an easy choice.

The thought if the platform sharing was a subliminal plus for me too but coming from a household that has alway had a cherokee or grand cherokee in the driveway I knew a jeep would be a safe be anyway.

My Dad owned Owned 4 Benzes in his lifetime one being a diesel I have an appreciation for the Mercedes brand, I myself owned a class and I personally feel that Most of the german marks have left quality by the wayside in favor of cost cutting since the introduction of the EURO raised their labor costs across the board.

I have also owned 3 VW's with a first generation Touareg being the most recent.

I will say this the jeep still has a ways to go to compare in overall quality and fit and finish compared to the toaureg.

A few areas are the headliner, A pillars, and seat frames.

On the underside of the vehicle things like the undercoat and axle wire brake wear sensor.

Re: Volkswagen Reportedly Interested In Acquiring Fiat.

The quality issue is not so much cost cutting but the competitive need to rapidly and continually produce new models with ever more performance, complexity and features. Manufacturers have to rely on computer aided design and there simply isn't the time to fully road test every component. Consumers and journalists are also increasingly fussy. A new $100,000 car will be rubbished because some LED is blown or the cup holder isn't positioned where they like it. I'm not making excuses, just explaining.

The historical irony would be quite delicious. Don't know how I would feel about Jeep being owned by a company Adolf had involvement with...
