Jeep Renegade first few days review

Hello,

Recently we decided that we need to replace our beloved 01 Nissan Pathinfder with 230K miles on the odo.

THE CHOICE:
Since we already had Grand Cherokee and Jeep was nagging us with those $500 gift certificates we decided to check out Renegade. On the short list there was also Subaru XV. After driving back to back both vehicles (dealership across the street) it was no brainer ... Subaru seemed cheap and small on the inside and also much more expensive (no deals, no rebates ... MSRP minus a little).

Renegade it is ...

THE BUY:

We took advantage of group buy here with Koons. Worked with Craig over e-mail phone, got a good deal, drove to DC and closed out the deal ... no issues, no buts, no BS. The deal seems to be fair and I'm happy with it. They also have big selection of vehicles on the lot and the place seems to be clean, professional and well run. At least that was my experience with them so I highly recommend and would definitely buy again.

We've got Latitude 4x4 with 2.4 L engine and auto tranny (came with passive entry, popular equipment group, blind spot monitoring and cold weather group) quite loaded... Amazing deal for the $$$.

So after 2 weeks with the vehicle I have to say I overall like the vehicle. It defiantly grows on you. Here are couple of observations:

LIKES:
- Look is polarizing and it gets some used to it but it is like no other car on the market. This doesn’t look like another KIA, Honda or HUNDAI clone … looks like a Jeep to me… even though it has Fiat 500x roots.

- Due to square dimensions this is MUCH bigger inside than it feels from the outside. Tested back to back with Subaru XV and there is no comparison. I have more headroom than in my Grand Cherokee. Feels quite specious. Back seat is tight but since I have 2 car seats in the back who cares ... Little ones have more then enough space back there.

- price / value … can’t beat it is amazing value for the $$$ with all the rebates and discount was able to get fully loaded latitude (passive entry, blind spot monitoring, heated seats and wheel) for around 22K + TTL

- 20/40/40 seats are awesome. With two cars seats in the back the middle portions can be lowered and have a way to carry skis, kayak paddles, fishing equipment … not to mention odd length items from Home Depot (or Ikea) runs .

- cargo floor with huge storage compartment is awesome … all my kids crap I can throw it there (it takes bike helmets, scooters, kites, etc … ). It swallows like a black hole.

- cargo area is square and almost vertical in the back makes is super practical for a small car like that. Still smallish as it is a small car after all but seems like they made the most of the space they had. Super practical for my needs …

- higher seating position, better visibility over NYC traffic + blind spot monitoring makes it easier to drive here

- bought Whispbar (part of Yakima) roof rack and it is actually the same size bars as in my Grand Cherokee = meaning whatever I was able to carry on GC roof I will be able to carry on this little dude (if I want to).

NEUTRAL:
- no homelink for garage opener. Since I have 1 car garage this one stays outside but it would be a big issue if I had to garage it.

- Seems like some storage solutions could use some improvements … how about sunglasses holder and some storage on the doors?

- no spare tire … I can get one but at least a donut should be provided. I can but a spare separately but than I loose storage in the trunk as I need full size due to 4x4 drivetrain.

- breaks seem to be super sensitive with not much modulation … Wife likes it though ...

DISLIKES:
- fuel economy wish it was a bit better (that was the only thing that hold me back initially from purchasing this vehicle). If I baby it I can break 30mpg on the highway. Hopefully this will improve as the engine breaks in but the reality is that this is NOT the most aerodynamically shaped vehicle.

- 2.4 L engine is a big 4 cylinder engine (borderline V6) but seems slow to me. It is adequate and no complains but I think for the size it should have done better. Coming from the last 2 vehicle with V6 engine this is going to take some time to get used to. I wish 2L turbo was offered here.

- Getting some vibration from the engine ... when idling at the spot light and when coasting down around 30mph. Hopefully this will improve as the engine breaks in (at least that's what I've been told). Also got Service 4WD briefly but it went right away. Hopefully this is not a sign of an issue to come but more of a break in period (Jeep had 27 miles on delivery).

- Hopefully since this is a 3 MY the quality is going to be OK. Not taking chances though definitely going to get max care over the next couple of months, for the price it is no brainer.

Will check in after couple of months ... so far so good ...

Re: Jeep Renegade first few days review

Forgot to mentioned one thing ... paid $23 dollars to fill up. Gas tank seem to be small but due to better MPG seems like my range (around 300 miles) is similar to my old Pathfinder so I'm good with that.

That being said Range to Empty gauge is a mess ... jumps around like crazy. It shows 100 miles goes to 30 and back to 90 ... whatever the calculation they are using seems to be to way to sensitive to instantaneous MPG. Hopefully maybe this can be addresses with software fix.

Re: Jeep Renegade first few days review

Update at 1 month and 1K miles.

Made appointment with dealer (aghhhh...) Me and my wife love the little bugger but it seems like it jolts at engine startup - to the point that kids ask "Why is the car doing shaky, shaky?". Especially bad after the car is warmed up (felt it was going to stall at the gas station after I filled up and restarted). Doesn't feel right ... I also had to add 0.5 qt of engine oil, I guess usage of some engine oil during break in is considered normal but my other cars didn't need it.

Additionally there is some vibration from the rear being felt in the gas pedal and floor when going around 30-35. Seems to be very common issue if you read on the net. Although the vibration seems to improved greatly - maybe drivetrain has to break in but this is recent design and most cars today require very little break in if any. The saving grace might be the service 4wd message that came (and went) recently - hopefully some codes are stored.

Got the survey from Jeep also. Blasted them for piss poor QA. I should have not had to go to a dealer with those issues. Hopefully this can be sorted out because besides that the car functionally is great. Enjoying driving it also...

Unfortunately knowing my dealer I suspect I will get one of the two answers:
- can't replicate your issues
- can replicate but "they all do that"

Hopefully those issues can be addressed and I can enjoy driving this car as I personally think it is a great product (minus drivetrain issues) but I can't recommend it right now due to issues.

Also who said it has tiny trunk?

Jeep Renegade first few days review

Made appointment with dealer 2 weeks ago. The car has been in the shop for two days (tomorrow will be 3) and the dealer (Island Jeep in Staten Island,NY) didn't even bothered to diagnose the issue ("tech didn't get to it yet") Obviously a stalking tactic as they are not that willing to do any work under warranty.

"Loving" the dealer experience ... nothing but aggravation and problems as obviously the don't "do loaners". They are holding on to my car and do nothing, great! Don't think there is an issue but given that warning message came up doing just due diligence on my behalf to ensure that there are no bigger issues with the car and by driving it not making it worse.

Re: Jeep Renegade first few days review

After 3 days in the shop dealer wasn't able to diagnose the problem nor find anything wrong (no kidding). They flashed some modules (ABS and PCM). Hopefully will not have to repeat that aggravating experience with dealer anytime soon.
