Re: KL Mopar Towbar

For those that don't know, the Aussie KL Limited comes fitted "for", but not "with" a Tow Bar.

In other words Limited owners get the Oil Cooler, different gear Ratio and electrical Harness fitted at the factory but not the actual Tow Bar itself. Your Dealer here in Oz will have to do that, or you can get it fitted yourself.

The KL gets the Class 4 (Heavy Duty) towbar.

Re: KL Mopar Towbar

Thanks for the info. I too thought I would be getting the towbar after reading my build sheet.

I have no intention of putting one on but if I decide to I would try and do it the proper way of changing the rear bumper bar. Just to get the full 4500lbs towing capacity, that alone should help for resale value.

Marty I do have to say your setup looks pretty nice.

Hi joezep, do you realise that 4,500lbs is equal to 2,041kgs?

The maximum towing capacity for the 3,2l KL with a torque value of 316Nm is 2,200kg (braked), or 450kg (unbraked).

The setup on our KL Cherokee is the recommended and ADR62/02 & AS4177.1 approved Class 4 Heavy Duty (2,200kg) Towbar specific to the 3.2l KL Cherokee. In addition it is a genuine "Mopar" part. So what we have is indeed the "proper" Towbar for this vehicle.

The look of the rear plastic bumper bar has absolutely nothing to do with the towing capacity of the Towbar as the Towbar is connected to the vehicle's chassis.

Please visit the Towbars Australia website where you can learn all about the various Classes of (recommended & approved) Towbars for various types of vehicles:

All the best,

Marty

Re: KL Mopar Towbar

Oops your right didn't see the kg on the sticker been spending to much time on this US forum .

It's a shame we don't get it installed from the factory like our American friends. From the pictures it seems that they cut a section in the middle of the bumper, is that right?
Just one more question do we lose any ground clearance with this setup?

Hi joezep and Happy New Year

Yes I thought that ours would be like the USA version, but obviously not. From what I can tell there is no loss of ground clearance.

Yep, been there, done that; ... it's the same Towbar as described in post #2.

Us Aussies do Towbars very well. Any reputable (certified) Towbar fitter will provide the correct KL towing system to ensure a safe system :-)

I acquired an extract of the Hayman Reese fitting instructions for the KL tow bar. The drawing does not look quite the same as the picture in Post #2.

The instructions include:

"... remount impact beam to vehicle.
NOTE:
Impact Beam not being able to be refitted on Trailhawk variant.
On Trailhawk variants of vehicle, discard impact beam instead.
"

WTF?
Impact beam = rear bumper??
No thanks!!

Re: KL Mopar Towbar

OK. Moving on from Hayman Reese and back on topic to the Mopar bar - has anyone fitted one to a Trailhawk?
Do you get to keep your rear bumper?
Does the Trailhawk version, like the Limited above, say "for trailer towing only", which presumably precludes its use as a recovery point or for mounting a spare wheel carrier?
Pics?

Thanks Marty. I have found a source to get the US Trailhawk trailer hitch delivered to Australia at a reasonable price. I have also identified both the US and Australian test load procedures and will try to find someone who can give the US product a load rating for Australia without further testing. I am an engineer, but not a mechanical engineer, however I calculate that we should be able to get the US integrated tow hitch (basically a replacement of the rear bumper) certified for 450kg unbraked (the vehicle rating) and at least 1100 kg braked, which would meet my needs. I will post information if I am successful.
Greg
