1st Jeep, no more lurking

I don't normally do "intro" threads. Yeah I'm here, you'll usually figure it out when you see posts, but I guess now that I'm not lurking anymore I'll say hi.

This is my 1st Jeep, but I'm not even remotely "new" to the car/truck world, or to forums. I'm actually a member of several other enthusiast forums so I'm familiar with the process.

Anyway, like the title said, I'm done lurking. I've been peeking around the threads here absorbing some information, and seeing what there is to see. I've posted in a few so I figured I'd introduce myself (kinda).

I go by Shots, and I live in N.E.Ohio. That's about as specific as I get, and any of you who may have seen me on the other forums already know why.
My Jeep is a '14 GC Overland. It's mostly stock, for now. I don't have a whole lot of mods in mind for it, but that's how I always start and end up with unique vehicles.

Since this is an intro thread, here's a shot of it.

Re: 1st Jeep, no more lurking

Thanks.

I know I said there weren't any plans to modify it yet, but apparently that has changed already. The Mrs. has decided it needs to be more rugged. To use her words "more Jeepish".
I've got a Ram with a lift, mud tires, etc so I certainly know how to do rugged. We traded our RT Charger for the Jeep so she's apparently going all in with it. If it's a street queen she wants the fast nimble car, if not she wants a more aggressive all terrain vehicle.
So I guess it's time to swap out the rims/tires, ditch the chrome for some color matched or painted trim, and then go from there. I don't know, maybe some flares, rock rails, or something. I don't plan on doing any heavy off-roading, but I do like to be able to drive back to a camp site, trail head, hunting spot, etc without worrying about banging things up. I'll take it off road, but (like my truck) given the choice of taking a light trail around a mud hole, or pile of rocks, I will go around. The truck and Jeep both sticker at just under $50K so I'm not about to beat the crap out of them for no reason.
Anywyay back on point. Yesterday (I guess to get things started) she took the Overland badge off the hatch, and asked about blacking out the chrome Jeep badges. I'd almost care that she took the badge off, but that's the first time she's "modified" any of her cars/trucks. Usually she asked me to make the changes for her, so the fact that she's actually taking part in this one (however minimal her involvement) is pretty cool.

Any suggestions, from anyone out there? Right now, I'm thinking a set of Rubicon take-offs would be a nice touch. As all Overlands and Summits do, it does have the QL suspension so a lift is apparently out of the question. From what I've read here, the 255/75/17 will fit (just barely) without the HD brakes.

Re: 1st Jeep, no more lurking

Since I was not able to find an answer about fitment of the Rubicon rims (here or elsewhere) I decided to take the safe route and went with a set of Sahara rims. I'm actually glad I did a bit more looking, because once I saw these rims I knew they were the right set. FWIW, it looks like the Rubicons will fit, because I saw a couple WK2's with them. The only question though is if they had spacers or anything. Not a lot of details out there. Oh well.
Moving on. As I mentioned I went with a set of Sahara take-offs. They're from a '16 so they're polished with granite pockets instead of all one color like the 15 and prior. I wrapped them in a set of BFG KO2's (255/70/18). It's tight with the suspension all the way down into park mode but there's no contact even with the wheels at full lock. I'm interested to see if I get any contact in normal height (or either off-road heights) with suspension articulation. Any contact is going to be with the wheel well liner. The tires are easily clear of the suspension components. I'll update if I ever have any rub though, but testing it in the driveway at all heights, and turning the wheels there is zero contact.

And the other thing I've done since my last post is I blacked out the chrome valance on the front bumper. I'll be doing the fog light bezels, mirrors, and maybe the grille rings and window trim. Basically, getting rid of the chrome a little at a time. It's not expensive to paint myself, but it is quite a bit of effort.

Re: 1st Jeep, no more lurking

And just to put everything on one place, I also customized the jack try so I can keep all my stuff organized too.
I had to do a little trimming to make it fit inside the Sahara rim, and still close the lid but it works great now.

Next I'll probably be modifying the storage trays that go next to the tire, so they fit too. They'll take a little more effort, but I'm pretty sure I can make them work. I'll post some photos if I pull it off.

Re: 1st Jeep, no more lurking

Also a shot of the clearance over the brakes with those rims, since I've seen a lot of questions about it. Heck I was wondering too when I bought them.

I don't have a V8, or diesel, though I do have the tow package. I have no idea if I have the HD brakes or not (I didn't think so but I've read tow package does), so here's what little gap there is in case anyone is wondering.

Re: 1st Jeep, no more lurking

Got a little creative on the storage trays today. When I upgraded the tires, I upped the size a bit, so the spare tire takes a little more room in the hole. As a result the storage trays don't fit. Or should I say, they didn't fit. I did a little trimming and now they fit just fine.

Re: 1st Jeep, no more lurking

So I finally got it off the pavement today. I didn't do anything crazy. No mud, or rock crawling, and didn't even have to lock in the 4wd into any specific mode (just left it auto). The trail was mostly just loose dirt, areas of gravel, and a bunch of craters. Like I said, nothing crazy, just more like a warm up. I was basically looking for a chance to take a few photos that were a little more Jeep like. Here's 4 of what I came up with. I would have liked to take photos of the areas that were bit rougher or steeper, but those places weren't exactly the best places to stop, and even if they had been, they didn't really offer a good place to take the photo from. So here's 3 mundane shots, but at least they're not on asphalt (which was pretty much the goal of the trip).

Re: 1st Jeep, no more lurking

The grille rings are now black too. No pictures of them on the Jeep yet, but this is a pretty easy project.
I popped them out with a set of trim tools. Thanks for the tips from other threads.
Then I scuff the chrome with some emery. This was by far the hardest part, and took me about 2 hours.
Then I went over them with some ScotchBrite to smooth out any lines.
I took them outside and hit them with some self etching primer.
And lastly, hit them with some satin black paint. All in all, I'll have a few hours of work into it, and roughly $20 in supplies. Not too bad.
With the trim rings matching the lower valance, now all I've got to do is the mirrors and fog light bezels.

Here's a few photos till I get an installed shot.
First is a shot of the rings, scuffed and ready for primer.
Second is primed ready for paint
Third is painted
Last is a close up of one painted

Re: 1st Jeep, no more lurking

Looks great.....that's the plan for my Trailhawk eventually, I will keep the stock wheels but want to put some 255/70/18 KO2s on there.....and pick up an odd 255/70/18 off of a Sahara as a spare.

Re: 1st Jeep, no more lurking

Thanks. I really like the KO2's. I've had many AT and MT tires over the years, and so far I have no complaints about these.

Here's another shot of the rings, out of the direct sunlight (for the most part anyway).

Re: 1st Jeep, no more lurking

Aaaaaannnd here it is. Just a driveway shot, but better than nothing.

I was only going to post the one that's more direct toward the front, but I had to post the angled shot after seeing my dog watching out the window. I had no idea he was in the shot, until I came inside an uploaded the photos.
