2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.7 V6

Hello Members. Forgive me but I'm relatively new to the Jeep world. I purchased my 2005 Jeep GC back on the East Coast. I bought it the summer after we had a huge snowstorm in MD. It never snowed again in MD. I moved from MD to AZ in early 2015. The trip was fantastic with no problems with the Jeep. I pulled a small U-Haul for 2,300+ miles (took a detour in Arkansas). I've been here in Northern AZ for about 18 months and love it. A lot of Jeep owners here and a lot of off-road trails! Unfortunately, my engine blew 7/22/16. No warning or anything. Anyway, I had it towed to a local shop because he told me that maybe he could salvage the motor. It seemed it was a blown head gasket. Well, he had his mechanic look it over and I was told that one of the cylinders had no pressure so I needed a new engine.

I am a novice when it comes to mechanics but that just didn't seem right. I was thinking a Ring job or a Valve job. The shop is wanting 5k+ to install a motor!! I convinced him that I could get a used motor a lot cheaper and have it shipped to him and he agreed. I just won't get a warranty from the shop on the motor. Installation will run between $1300-$1400. (Trying to get the motor from LKQ for $1200)

Am I getting ripped off? I had an engine replaced before but that was years ago and in a Honda. It was way cheaper! If anyone could give me any help, it would be greatly appreciated. I only have a budget of about 3k.

I'm also looking for the driver's side door hinges (used). The door was bent "backwards" and the hinges were bent away from the mounting pillar. I'm hoping that just replacing the hinges with some used ones will at least get the door to close. I'll have to get the body work done at a later time.

Thanks for taking the time to read this thread. If you're ever in AZ, let me know. I hear there are a lot of off road trails around here. I've already traveled from Jerome to Chino Valley off-road (beginners). What an amazing ride and the scenery was just beautiful. I also know a few good places to eat. LOL

I hope to hear from someone soon!! I'm suppose to call LKQ on 8/01/16 to hopefully verify the motor.
