2015 SRT GC Owner

Hi all,

I always find a good forum that goes with my new ride so here I am.

I spent 12 months deciding what to buy next, was it going to be an SRT GC, SQ5 or another X5. I looked at all of the options availble the build quality of the afor mentioned 3 SUV's and I always came back to the SRT GC.

The one thing that put me off the SRT GC was the fuel economy, I cover around 1000km's a week so thats a hell of a fuel bill for me. But then my wife reminded me that life is short and I should buy what the heart wants. So I pulled the trigger and purchased a new White SRT with HK and Spider Monkey wheels.

I hadn't test driven one before, I even refused a test drive when handing over the $ for my new purchase. I chose my cars based on visible build quality, components used and then I modify to suit my driving style.

I picked it up yesterday and wow, I've owned and modified a lot of cars in my time, In fact I already had a mod list prep'd for the GC but I'm wondering if I need it. The exhaust sounds perfect, intake noise just fine and overall performance fine for now. It's new so I'm taking my time. The driving experience far exceeds anything I've ever driven before and I've always been a huge fan of ZF's transmissions...

The biggest shock though, fuel economy, it's amazing! Over the first 600km's (yes I've covered 600km's in 2 days) I'm getting 13.5L per 100km on a long run and around 15L per 100km when I start hitting traffic. Awesome!

The one thing I would like to change is the thermostat, I like my blocks to keep a constant temperature that doesn't fluctuate too much. It gets HOT here in Perth WA, obviously I can change the thermostat for a cool running one but modding the fan speeds to stop engine temps from varying too much will require ECU changes which may void the warranty. I'll come back to this.

Anyway, long intro, just wanted to say thanks for all of the info I've gathered from this site that helped with my decision to purchase the GC.

Cheers all.

Don't change the thermostat

It's been 40 here in Vic and mines stayed a nice constant temp

Put a colder one in any the temps will fluctuate more and in the hot climate the fans will always be running to control it if you get a tune

Mines SCT tuned and has a catback

It's just like factory but that little better bit more power no more MDS (my request) and totally factory like to drive

Talk to Herrod in Vic about the tune, FCA are ok with tuned vehicles, Herrod was doing lots of things for FCA, the benefit of the SCT tune is you can return to stock when you take it to the dealer

And unlike diablosport and hptuner the SCT uses the factory boot loader so the rom isn't permanently edited so stock is factory stock, not stock tune but detectable with the right tools

It may be a little while before you can tune the 15 like you can the 14, you can tune it now but you need to send the ecu away to be modified, I'd wait till it's unlocked then go for it

Mines done 42000km now and I get good economy

It's not that great on the freeway and I have MDS disabled so that'd help a little but the city/combined trips aren't all bad considering what it is

To work and back it uses the same as the G6E turbo I used to have

Re: 2015 SRT GC Owner

Thanks MexicanBatman, good to hear about the thermostat, I'd seen so many people mention this as a good idea. When living in the UK I always used cooler running thermostats and fans to keep the block temps stable for track day builds.

I'm also not concerned about the MDS, I havent really noticed any difference fuel use wise with it on or off, but then I havent covered a lot of k's yet. Hopefully the ecu in the 15 can be unlocked soon, I'll talk to Herrod about it in a few weeks.

Thanks again buddy.
