76 cj5 running but goes dead sometimes

I have a 76 CJ 5 with 258 engine, a couple of weeks ago my husband was driving down a rough road at about 35 mph. He came to a curve mashed clutch to shift down to 2nd gear and it went dead. Tried to crank with ignition nothing. Shifted into 2nd let off clutch it backfired through exhaust and then cranked. We had no problems for 2 weeks. Filled up with gas, left and went half mile down road and went dead. Wouldnt crank with ignition again. He squirted carb cleaner in carb and it cranked. Went maybe 500 ft and it backfired through exhaust and blowed muffler out. And wouldnt crank. Squirted carb cleaner in carb again and it cranked. Went 5 or so miles quit again. Squirted carb with carb cleaner, cranked again. He has had no more problems, but is worried to go off very far in it now. We have had it for 2 years and this is the first time it has done this. Could it be the distributor? He says it has no points in it and is wondering if it is a presto light distributor. Any thoughts on the problem?
