87 wagoneer

New guy here. And a di-it-selfer person. Not an expert but a kind of learn as I go person, have some knowledge in mechanics and electrical, but not an expert. Looks like a lot of members may have newer jeeps on this forum. Can't afford a newer one so I drive my old 87 Wagoneer. It's been good to me. Straight 6, limited wagon, automatic, air, all electric. Only thing is most of the stuff doesn't work, like some of the windows, electric won't roll up or down, a motor is missing from the driver side window and someone clipped the wiring from it, so looks like a major wiring job. Air doesn't work. Heater doesn't work real good, kind of cold right now. High idle. The coolant recovery tank cracked on me, not sure why, anti freeze is good, but it cracked during this frigid cold weather, but only at 20 degrees, so it may have just been the plastic tank was getting weak. So I am in the process of replacing the recovery tank, flushing out heater core and radiator. Then I may clean the carb valve body and re-adjust the electronic sensor on the carb. I also noticed some burned wires on the front near the lights just under the air cleaner, but haven't noticed it causing any operational problems. I probably need to figure out the wiring configuration on this jeep, because it looks like there have been some wiring problems in the past before I bought it. Probably need a major tuneup. Right now I got my work cut out for me, but hoping to learn some from this site and find out more about jeeps in general.

Re: 87 wagoneer

Didn't get any response on this post. So I guess I'll respond myself. I cleaned out the cooling system. Flushed radiator and heater core. Heater works great now. I have heat. Cleaned out the carb air inlet, choke, not sure what it is called. It was gummed up a bit. I do have a straight six with fuel injection. Ran good for a while, now I noticed a rough idle, it goes up and down on park and when I get up around 40 miles an hour the jeep starts knocking back and forth, I then put it in neutral and it smooths out after a while. I believe it is from the engine not exactly sure. I'll take a look at it and see. I do know it needs new plugs, they haven't been changed in a while, so I may need to do that, may help with knocking. Any tips helpful. Thanks a bunch!

Welcome and I like you do my own stuff to my vehicles. Projects are great and it looks like you are moving ahead. Check vacuum hoses ,pcv connection and possible intake gasket leaking, as it sounds like a vacuum leak somewhere.
Good luck

Re: 87 wagoneer

Thanks for reply. I checked out some things, and I believe the problem may becoming from the tailpipe. It is gone, muffler O.K. Had a lot of emissions and noise coming from the muffler, yea there was no tail pipe. I rechecked the situation and I believe the loss of power and jerking is because of poor engine performance due to bad emissions. Plugs were need of replacement also. Not positive but pretty sure. When parts come in I will install and see. If it works I'll post it. Hope it helps someone like myself. I am pretty much a do it self-er. I have repaired many machines in my career, usually electrical related. Most everything man made works on the same principles. With a little investigation you can usually figure it out. Thanks a bunch!
