Re: '96 cherokee

Welcome to the garage.
So what is the real problem, does it take a long time of cranking before it starts? Does it crank normally or slow?
When it starts, does it idle fine?

Re: '96 cherokee

Before next cold start, i would try to prime the system: switch ignition from off to run, wait 3 seconds, switch back to off. Now again from off to run, wait 3 seconds and back to off. Now again from off to run, but after 3 seconds you start. If the fuel had drained back to the tank, then this way should get it back, however there will still be some air in the line.
If it now starts ok, you will need to solve the drain back problem. Don´t know where the fuel pressure regulator is on the cherokee, but most probably it will have a return line to the tank. If so, i would first change the fuel pressure regulator.

Re: '96 cherokee

I have found some on-line manual/diagrams, am considering in-line regulator, leave existing {in tank}, I understand pressure tests, currently turn the key a few times to run pump, prefer to avoid drop tank

Re: '96 cherokee

I would just change the regulator first and see if it helped.

Re: '96 cherokee

the regulator is apparently integral with fuel pump in-tank, still researching, intend to question dealership, the vehicle runs fine after started, so I don't expect problem is filter, they could be replaced periodically as maintenance, and process of elimination, yes, the regulator appears to be the issue, air in the line after shutdown, evident by priming line by running pump a few times, starts immediatly, still considering installing a check valve as a quick-fix, I see the pump assembly can be removed without dropping the tank as it is mounted on an accessible part of the tank, I appreciate the assistance
