98 TJ bangs into reverse ....

Hello, was wondering if anyone could tell me why my TJ bangs HARD when I put into reverse? Sometimes if I accelerate and quickly stop from 2nd down to 1st as well but otherwise no other issues. One guy said I need an entire new rear diff but there is no noise or anything? Anyone?

Re: 98 TJ bangs into reverse ....

Welcome to the garage.
I would first have a look at the rear prop shaft joints for play. If that seems to be ok, then check the diff fluid level and take a small sample of the fluid to check for metal glinsters. If it was some time ago that you changed the diff fluid, then i would do it now and inspect the ring gear and pinion for wear.
