A long hello and history

Hey everyone--

I've been slinking around this site for a little while now. I've really been enjoying the wealth of pictures and information available here! At first I had no intention of joining but I got tired of the limitation on the daily thread views so I made an account and I'm pretty pleased that I did.

So, a little history. I'm originally from Colorado but recently moved to Cali. My first Jeep was a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. It was pretty basic as far as extras go but it got me through the snow and up the mountains and I loved it.

Recently my wife and I decided it was time for an upgrade, so after a good deal of hunting around we picked up a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the 5.7L hemi in brilliant black pearl coat and it is more than a worthy successor to my last. Unfortunately I did have a few problems with it early on.

Cosmetically, the front bumper and bumper fascia were cracked, so I had them replaced. Mechanically, I would get an intermittent groaning/shuddering occasionally when turning while backing up. It was impossible to diagnose it since it was so sporadic but eventually during a trip back to CO the Jeep developed a terrible groan and shudder during every turn. At some point it made a pop sound and stopped. We finally took it to a dealer and just told them to tear down the rear differential and find the problem at the risk of paying for the tear down if they couldn't diagnose it. Fortunately they replaced the rear diff carrier and pump (woot for warranty work!). It has been almost perfect ever since--occasionally I get a bit of a shudder coming from the front end when turning but hopefully it won't develop into a bigger issue like the rear diff did.

This is the first vehicle I've had any interest in modifying and up to now I've installed a Magnaflow exhaust and a K&N cold air intake. The pair improved my gas mileage about a mile per gallon if I drive it cautiously but the sound is so much better during acceleration I think I get on it more than before the mods Incidentally my father also has basically the same Jeep in silver and we've done the mods together. In my youth I had little interest in cars so this is pretty new for me!

Pretty soon I'd like to get LED tail lights (not really sure if I want to go with red or clear with black or tinted, though--I've seen all three on ebay). I recently ordered SRT8 replica wheels so I'm pretty excited to get those on! I'd like to get Jeep center caps for them; should I get the SRT center caps or should I order chrome center caps? I'm not sure which fit and I'd like the center cap to match the chrome...if the SRT caps are polished aluminum, they may lack the luster of chrome and not match right.

Whew, alright...I'll post some pics from before the exhaust and CAI. I'll be sure to get some more up after I get the wheels on, too.

Wow, one of the best intros I read.

In terms of the tail lights, either get the RED or the CLEAR (which could be tinted). And as for the center caps, I'm guessing chrome center caps since you have a hemi not the srt. Anyways enjoy browsing the website and welcome again.

Re: A long hello and history

the SRt center caps say "Jeep" and not SRT. I have heard they dont fit perfectly on the SRT reps...but with a little epoxy...are fine!

Congrats on the purchase and we are glad you decided to be part of the JG family! Thats right...family! We all love Jeeps and you will fit in perfect! Get some pics before the natives get restless!!! LOL

Re: A long hello and history

So, I've never really been an active member of a forum before so I'm not really familiar with image hosting websites to post pics. I sort of naively assumed I could just directly upload images to the forum but I suspect storage space is limited. Any recommendations for image hosting sites?
