Electric Trailer Brake Controller

Can anyone help???

I've just had an electric trailer brake controller fitted to my 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited - diesel and right hand drive.

The controller appeared to work fine but has stopped activating the trailer brakes when the foot brake is depressed. The manual override works fine but I need the foot brake to operate the trailer brakes.

Are there any peculiar issues when fitting electric trailer brake units to Jeep Grand Cherokees?

Re: Electric Trailer Brake Controller

Are your car's brake lights illuminating when you press the brake pedal?

Re: Electric Trailer Brake Controller

No!
They only work when the manual override is operated

Re: Electric Trailer Brake Controller

Brake light fuse has blown. Replace and test car without trailer.

Does your trailer have a lot of conventional filament lights, or is it fitted with LED lights?

Re: Electric Trailer Brake Controller

Hi Barboots,

I misread your earlier reply - my Jeep's brake lights work when the pedal is depressed.

My trailer has conventional filament globes.

Re: Electric Trailer Brake Controller

With the trailer connected, are all brake lights coming on? ie: car and trailer?

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Electric Trailer Brake Controller

The car lights illuminate but not the trailer, nor does the electric brake controller indicate that it's sending voltage to the trailer brakes.

The trailer brakes, trailer lights, and controller voltage display all work fine when using the manual override.

Re: Electric Trailer Brake Controller

What type of brake controller? Do you understand how to set it?

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Electric Trailer Brake Controller

Steve,

It's a Prodigy P2. I read the instructions and followed them to the letter. When that didn't work, and thinking I was a numpty, I went back to the auto electrician, with the trailer connected, and he couldn't work it out. We've checked all the connections, checked the trailer circuits, and still can't work out what's wrong. That's when I started thinking it was a 'Jeep' thing. I then went to the local Jeep dealership thinking maybe there was a Jeep Trailer Plug 'module' or similar, only to be advised that the Grand Cherokee doesn't have such a thing.

So now I'm stumped???????

Re: Electric Trailer Brake Controller

Did the auto elec definitely get the controller trigger wire signal from a brake light? The Grand is no different to most new cars... you can't use the brake pedal wiring to trigger the controller. Nothing radical to consider.

FWIW, my first P3 had a display fault which arose within a few hours use. It's not inconceivable that you have had an early failure in the controller.

As far as testing goes, if you access the controller wiring, test for voltage on the red wire of the controller when you press the brake pedal. If it is around 12V then either your controller is set up wrong or stuffed. If it is more like 5-8V the controller has been wired incorrectly off the brake pedal. If it is absent you will need to find out where the brake signal was sourced and verify the connection.

I'll try to help if you have more info available.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Electric Trailer Brake Controller

Steve,

I believe the brake signal wire was sourced from the trailer plug, which is apparently the appropriate method.

I really appreciate the advice thus far.

I'll carry-out some more testing in the morning and hopefully get it sorted. We we're hoping to head off to northern NSW on Wednesday, but this has to be fixed or we don't go.

Cheers

Yeah I figured that... actually I thought you might have been planning to be on the road already. Anyway, we will definitely get it sorted tomorrow.

Before going ahead with the tests I suggested, I'd be disassembling the car's trailer wiring socket to check if there's two wires in the Pin 6 position...if not you might have to follow the wire back until you find a splice upstream.

Cheers,
Steve
