Engine starts then stops

Hi

Can someone point me in the right direction to determine my current issue with my WJ jeep GC 2.7CRD Overland?

it has been running fine for months then last week whilst driving home it just cut out and we lost all power, it will crank over/start/run for a few seconds then stops.

Engine management light is on I have plugged in a reader and no faults are logged. I have tried several tricks (unplugging battery/removing fuses) but it will only crank over and run for a few seconds, I have removed the mass airflow sensor and injected ignition start up spray and it will fire up and run for about 10 seconds and then dies.

I cant hear any noise from the fuel pump in the tank?
I have been told it could be crank sensor not telling fuel pump to run ?

Please Help!

Regards Chesh

Re: Engine starts then stops

Welcome to the garage.
Just checking the diesel version manual, but i think that there is no fuel pump in the tank. There is a low pressure and a high pressure pump mounted on the front side of the engine, driven by the engine itself
At startup the ECM uses engine coolant temperature and crank sensor input to determine the injected fuel quantity .I wonder why the check engine light is on, but no fault it set.

Re: Engine starts then stops

As stated above, i can´t find anything about the diesel version that it should have a pump in the tank. All the schematics i have only show the fuel pump in the tank for the gas engine versions. The diesel has a low pressure and high pressure pump on the engine.
But just check the PDC (power distribution center) under the hood if there is a relay in the fuel pump position.

Re: Engine starts then stops

Just found the connector pinout for the diesel version tank unit and there are no fuel pump pins. So we can consider that there is no electrical fuel pump inside the tank. So then it should only have the low and high pressure pumps mounted on the engine. Could be that the high pressure pump is bad, but there is also a fuel pressure solenoid on the rear side of the fuel rail. Maybe worth to check the connector on it.

Re: Engine starts then stops

Hi
I have the following codes

P0100
P0201
P0340
P0700
P1130
P1601
P1652

I'm not sure how old these codes are how do I clear them/reset them to see if it will start up ?

Re: Engine starts then stops

I will have a look into the codes. You can reset them with a scanner, i believe that a battery disconnect will not do the trick, but you can try it. The codes by itself will not prevent the engine from starting, but you never know if a battery disconnect will reset something in the ECM. Leave it disconnected for some minutes and try again.

Re: Engine starts then stops

Best is to reset all codes and see which one comes back.
The P0100 shows that the MAF sensor has insufficient action. Could be a dirty MAF sensor.
The P0201 shows a failure in the #1 cylinder injector circuit.
The P0340 shows a problem with the cam sensor/circuit.
The P0700 is a generic transmission failure code, which only shows that there is a fault code set in the TCM.
The P1130 shows a problem with the fuel rail pressure sensor.
The P1601 shows an internal TCM failure (for this reason the P0700 is shown)
The P1652 shows a data bus failure (short). But this same data bus is used by the ECM to send the fault codes, so it should be working ok now.

So try the battery reset and the ECM memory errase and see which faults come back.

Re: Engine starts then stops

Hi
I finally got round to getting the codes erased by a professional the battery trick and unplugging the ecm for a few days did not clear any codes.

I reconditioned both high/low fuel pumps.

The only fault that comes up and does not allow the engine to run is a fault within injector number 1 circuit.

So I will be checking resistance across it and if that's fine I will be looking at the wiring loom from the injector to ecm.

Re: Engine starts then stops

I wonder if one injector circuit problem would prevent the engine from starting. It would run rough in that case, but it should run. Either way, attached the manual page with the injector wiring, so that you can measure the wiring.

Re: Engine starts then stops

I have unplugged all of the injectors and checked the resistance over the coil all of them are reading the same 0.5 ohms.

I have checked continuity from injector to ecu/ecm and there are no breaks.
I have switched ignition on and recorded an output from the ecu/ecm to each injector
No 1 = 54mv
No 2 = 66mv
No 3 = 72mv

I agree if it was a faulty injector it would probably run rough but at least run.

Engine will crank and run for 2/3 seconds any other ideas on what to check??

Regards
