GC Overland 3.0 Diesel or 5.7 V8 Hemi?

Hey all
Almost ready to move forward on a purchase of a new GC Overland but wondering why one would choose Diesel over V8 & vice versa.

Really enjoyed the Diesel but thinking the V8 maybe more fun. Would there be more issues with one over the other??

I will be towing on occasion but nothing serious or too heavy. Take out of the equation the cost of fuel between the 2... what would be peoples preferences and why.

Your thoughts and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

If you're going for fun, then yeah the V8 would probably be your best bet. I test drove a diesel and loved the torque and all, but the paddle shifters were useless since it has such a low redline, so that basically eliminates the fun.

I'd say the main reason for the diesel would be if you wanted better gas mileage and drive a lot of highway miles.

Here's your answer 😉 Gas it and go. None of that fooling around with that Urea piss. Or diesel emission regenerating cycles. Also I guess depending on where you live diesel fuel is almost 1 dollar a gallon more. At least by me it is. So for the little bit you save in mileage you would be paying for it at the pump. I didn't need the V8 but I wanted a tried and true Hemi engine. 😊

Thanks Dcorn. I note you drive the 3.6 V6, are you happy with it as this could be a possibility for me as it would save me $$.

I have been driving an 09 Toyota Highlander petrol V6 so query the driving capability and ability of the 3.6 due to the size/weight of the GC.

The diesel will definitely give you better mileage than either of the two gas engines but you have to run the numbers for where you live concerning the price of diesel fuel to see if those extra miles per gallon will actually save you money or not. where I live diesel is near a dollar a gallon more and there is no financial fuel case for it you are buying it for other reasons. some places diesel and gas are closer to the same price and you will see a cost savings in fuel in those places and that is something to consider.
The v6 will get better mileage than the v8 no question but there is not a significant difference in mileage IMO. EPA rates mixed driving between the v6 and v8 at 3 mpg difference. car and driver came up with a 1 mpg difference in their mixed driving tests. so v6 is better but not significantly. What you get out of either of them will depend a lot on your driving style and location.

If you want the absolute best fuel savings and don't care about the extra power than get the v6. If you want a little more power buy the v8. if you tow a good bit buy the diesel. Remember price diesel in your area and run your own numbers

But definitely if you are on the fence between the v6 and v8 then buy the v8 because if you don't you will just sit around later and wish you had.
Good luck

Don't test drive an SRT. It will make you not care about MPG. I tested an ecodiesel and was ready to buy it, I forgot my license plate that I was going to transfer to the new jeep so the dealer let us take an SRT home to go get it. End of story.

Re: GC Overland 3.0 Diesel or 5.7 V8 Hemi?

Hi all
Thanks for all your feedback and input. It's clear that there was only one choice so as of this afternoon I am the proud new owner of the Jeep grand Cherokee the V-8 hemi. super excited to pick it up next week.

The option of buying the V8 only became a consideration in the last 24 hours so I value your time to reply to my question and can't wait to get behind the wheel of my new beast Next week .

Thanks again and happy driving.

Gid

Good choice. I think at this point it's the less problematic route. Enjoy your new Jeep.

What Hemi said congrats nothing like a V8. Now you might want to look into getting a catch can for it.
