Smile G'day to all..

Hi everyone,

Just joined the forum and am looking at purchasing a Jeep in the near future.
Moved to Mt Isa from Perth and am keen on owning a vehicle with decent off road capability.
Probably for our family, a Grand Cherokee is closest to what we already own and would have scope for tuning and further improvement.
Having always owned petrol and LPG powered vehicles, I'm not averse to owning a diesel, but may find myself missing the outright performance of a petrol engine.
A good look on this forum may just change my mind.

Cheers,

Mal K

Re: G'day to all..

The diesel and petrol v6 performance is pretty similar, of course the power delivery is different, but you won't be disappointed with the diesel, it goes.

I don't think there is a Jeep dealer in Mt Isa, this could be a bit of a problem, you really want to be near a dealer if you have any problems, as they are the only ones with the diagnostic equipment to fix many electronic issues that can come up on the car.

I'm a big fan of my GC, its been great so far, but I'm not sure I would buy it in your situation.

Re: G'day to all..

Hey Benn0,
Never had any faith in dealerships to rectify many issues, too many bad experiences have coloured my view.
If the GC can be as reliable and trouble free as our Territory Turbos have been, from a mechanics perspective, I would certainly own one.
They are jam packed with electronics and that is my one reservation.
With any vehicle, there will be areas of concern and weakness, but as to how much I could deal with personally, well, that remains to be seen.
Decent scan tools cost $$$ and unfortunately they are all back in Perth!!
However, at some stage we have to update and the learning curve starts again
Cheers,
Mal K

Re: G'day to all..

Well unfortunately the dealerships have the software updates that fix the issues. They are applied as warranty fixes. We are able to access the uconnect software updates (the mulitmedia and climate control system) through this website, by becoming a member and loading it into the system via USB, or again, take it to the dealer to apply fixes.

One common issue for the diesel is dpf regen failure, if it is unable to clear the filter it goes into limp mode and needs to be towed to a dealer to be reset out of limp mode and have a manual burn done. Having said that, the latest software updates seem to have helped reduce this issue, but as you can see, being in Mt Isa and having to get the car to a dealer to get this fixed can be painful.

The petrol has less of these issues, but there have been reports of rough transmission shifting, which again is a software update for the fix. The auto in the petrol has been modified by Jeep, the diesel auto is straight from ZF, and seems to behave a little differently and is stronger.

I'm not meaning to put you off here, its a great car, but just want to make you aware that there are issues only the dealer can fix and being a long way from a dealer could result in major headaches. Having said that, many of the bugs seem to be getting ironed out now. If you want to read about current known issues and fixes, you can look through this:

Re: G'day to all..

Yes,
DPF re-gen issues are especially common in town driven vehicles, ones that tend to be driven around slowly and for mainly short distances, and this is not just common to Jeep.

I would hate to have to make a 2000km round trip just to sort this out :-)

Keen on the diesel, as it is the intelligent choice, but the heart screams SRT8 as the performance would be closer to my Territory Turbo...

I am heading to Brisvegas on the 25th of this month for a couple of days so may visit the dealer for a closer look..

I appreciate that there are many things that the dealers only have access to, and miss the relationships our business back had in Perth, with strategic dealers in the local area.

Who is the best dealer to speak to (if more than one..) and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Benn0!

Re: G'day to all..

Cricks MtGravatt seem to do the best deals that I've heard.

There are some chips and tuning options available for the diesel, Murchisons are good for aftermarket stuff. You might want to stick to 18 inch rims for better tyre choice and offroading.

Just on those dpf regen failures, this was the thing, it was happening on cars being driven lots of highway kms. We think the last update has fixed it, something to do with a sensor being misread.

You can get an OBD scanner pretty cheap that will allow you to monitor a bunch of stuff including filter levels, and temps, as well as read error codes.

Re: G'day to all..

Hmm, unusual re-gen issue... and one that would certainly affect us being out here and a little remote!

The CRD V6 has been around for a while so should be pretty sorted from a mechanical perspective. Its a shame that these electrical glitches/errors take the shine off a capable, well performing and relatively economical unit.

Looking forward to a good look and test drive when I'm in town.

Cheers,

Mal K

Re: G'day to all..

Yep, the motor has been pretty good so far, I haven't heard of any failures. Like I said the transmission can be temperamental, and the electronics can give a few problems. For me, I had a minor electronics issue that upset cruise control and ESC, but they had an update for that and all good now. Otherwise, I'm happy.

Re: G'day to all..

G'Day Mal,

Welcome. Benno gives sound advice. I would concur, with what he has said with regard to you being isolated should you be affected by a DPF regen issue.

Having said that I bought on the mainland and returned to Tassie with a Dealer in Launceston and one in Hobart. I use Launceston as it is closer by nearly 300 clicks.

Fitted the vehicle out and then at the 8,000km mark we headed up thru the center to the Top End at Christmas time, down the west Coast. Took the vehicle (R2D2) out to Cape Peron and onto Herald Bight beach, then back into town at Shark Bay. All sand very hot and just quietly the National Parks and Wildlife Service have a PDF file that suggests recommended vehicle to tackle Cape Peron and a list of those that are not recommended. The Amarok which I nearly bought is listed as not recommenced to attempt the journey....The JGC is on the list of DO's. So we did. Awesome 4wd system and great V6 diesel engine.

After heading south to Perth and then back to Melbourne and home to Tassie we cover 16,000km trouble free.

Currently at 29,000kms and apart from sludge in the coolant bottle (bottle replaced and system flushed new OAT Purple coolant added) and (having the front axles replaced at 1000kms as part of a RRT) the vehicle has performed faultlessly. We pulled a camper trailer and the both trailer and vehicle were at max load. The vehicle feels bullet proof.

Lots of electronics yep, hope they are all talking to each other as they should. I have Quadralift and QDII fully Bull bar, winch, rock sliders, roof rack and pop up tent of roof in a pod. Fuel economy was excellent and we didnt hold back on how we drove it, especially in the open speed limit of the NT.

Some folks have no trouble at all others have their own personal nightmares to share.

Personally, I love my Jeep. I do mostly country driving as I am 1 hour out of Launceston. Never had a regen or DPF issue.

I know you'd love the JGC V6 Diesel.....though Benn0's words ring true for your isolated situation.

I wish you the best with what ever decision you make.

Cheers,

Rocksfly
