Getting Back Into The Jeep Scene For Better Or For Worse

Morning Everyone,
Wanted to say hi! Just bought a used 04 4.7 WJ Limited. Missed owning a Jeep. Had two other GC's before but went with a Dakota prior to owning this one because I needed the room. Three weeks into owning this one it has been in the shop more days than I've been able to drive it. Coolant keeps disappearing from the reservoir and isn't going onto the ground. Seems to be turning to steam in the exhaust. Shop put in a head gasket, looked everything over when engine was apart. Seemed good but now it is worse than before. Luckily dealer is paying the shop for all the fixes so far! Whew. They may buy it back from me if this keeps up though. This Jeep's got 96k on it. I'll create another post for my issues in another area. Maybe I'll end up with an 08 GC before everything's all said and done.

Have a good one!

Curt

Re: Getting Back Into The Jeep Scene For Better Or For Worse

sorry no one has helped you before now...

Did the engine have a misfire or any misfire codes stored?

A lot of the times with the 4.7...a misfire is a sure fire way to tell of a blown headgasket. Usually the gasket blows in the triangular cooling tunnel between the cylinders. Sometimes it can be ,missed if its pitted between the heads and the chambers. When they pulled the heads...did any of the pistons look clean on top? Or did they all have carbon build up?

Re: Getting Back Into The Jeep Scene For Better Or For Worse

Scott,
They did replace the gasket and what I think they called timing chain keepers or something like that. The chain keepers had chunks missing. Don't know how that could happen. Mechanic did see spots on the heads that were cleaned off from the coolant wash. No misfire codes that I know of. When I go to start her in the morning it runs rough. I assume because it is burning off coolant from overnight. It is still at the mechanic. Don't think he's had time yet to do more troubleshooting.

Got my main post about this up over here: Decisions, Decisions

sounds like he has the timing off. Did he send the heads to be redone?

No, he didn't. There didn't appear to be any warping, cracking, or damage.

hmmmm.....and its still getting coolant in the chambers? IMO...they need to send the heads off to be resurfaced. They are missing something.
