I’m in the UK and about 2 months ago in a Pistonheads forum a thread posed the question asking ‘what car could be bought for a £1000 which to the general public would look the most expensive?’
The usual trail of old Audis, BMWs, Jags and Mercedes followed but what caught my eye was a poster suggested a black 2000 Grand Cherokee (4.0) with reasonable mileage, a service history and 6 months MOT (mandatory annual test for a vehicle to be used on the public highway). I was amazed because currently the scrap/junk yard value of cars is between £200-£300 which puts the financial downside risk on that vehicle between £700-£800!
Another poster said of the WJ "that could easily pass as a £40k chelsea tractor. An old BMW or jag won't fool anyone".
I needed to investigate further, and I have spent some time lurking on WJ related forums to see what the owner community is like and what to look out for in a used Jeep (I have to say that its been great to read so many generous, supportive and enthusiastic posts on this and other Jeep forums).
Anyway, I have decided that I’m looking for a WJ Grand Cherokee 4.7, preferably an Overland. No hurry to buy …. but I’m tempted by a 4.7V8 model, under 80K miles, FSH and 6 months test on EBay with a current highest bid of less than £900 and 24 hrs to run!
