Hello from OZ & a question about Diesel Autos?

G'day guys,

Just joined, based in Sydney Australia. We tow our caravan with an aging Mitsubishi Pajero (2003 NP 3.2Litre Diesel Automatic) and we're looking at replacement vehicles. The Missus is thinking another Japanese 4WD, maybe a Landcruiser for the extra power BUT ... I'm wondering about A Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Diesel. Looks good value to me compared with the Toyota?

A question - towing with the automatic transmission (5 speed in the WH?; 8 speed in the WK?) - in my Pajero I have to manually shift when towing our 2 tonne van so I can avoid using 5th (Overdrive) or the transmission will cook.

How do the Jeep Auto-Transmissions go when towing? Do you still need to manually shift?

Thanks,

Nick

Re: Hello from OZ & a question about Diesel Autos?

Gday Nick, I have owned a JGC diesel with 8 speed auto for just on 12 months now, and pull about 2.5 tonnes (laden) caravan with it. The auto is just brilliant in my opinion and I have seen no signs of overheating. (There is access to the temp through the dashboard). The engine temp has climbed up on long uphill hauls but has yet to overheat. There is at least one thread on here about diesel engine temps.

Re: Hello from OZ & a question about Diesel Autos?

People will argue about letting the trans do its thing versus having some involvement. Putting the 8 speed in Sport seems to satisfy my preference for a few more RPM on the dial without having to manually shift. Many will say leave it alone totally in the default shift mode. If you did actually want to do some manual shifting it's right there on the steering wheel too!

Spinning things just that little bit faster reduces the shear loading across the face of the gears. That, along with ATF temperature in general, is a good part of what destroys an auto trans with towing. However the CRD and 8 speed is going to make a milk run out of anything you did with the Paj. My 1800kg boat is almost like it isn't there. I almost got a fright on a long drive home one night when I gently applied the brakes and the back window lit up all red from the brake lights against the boat.

I have no worries about comfortably hauling the 2.5T full height off-road van we just bought. People here are towing much larger with big smiles and "no worries mate".

Cheers,
Steve

As I said in Nicks other post, it tows with such ease you never have to think about it. If I wasn't having to be super smooth for the horses sake, you could just tow a couple of tonne as you would drive the car by itself, you know, like a B-Double driver on speed.

Snuke, responding to my question in the Export & Diesel Forum thread you commented that you didn't see much difference between your 2005 Petrol Pajero and the JGC for towing. I can understand the issue with kW rating but I'm surprised the extra torque on the diesel vs the Pajero petrol didn't make a more noticeable difference?

Re: Hello from OZ & a question about Diesel Autos?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I said I didn't see much difference between my petrol Pajero and the diesel Pajero that I drove only once.

I said it will be a night and day difference between your Pajero and the GC. There are other ex Pajero owners on here that will say the same thing.

Petrol or diesel, the Pajero was always having to work when towing. Of course it was far more noticeable in the petrol, with constant revs around peak torque about 3,800rpm.

There is no competition between the two. The Pajero will win out in service cost, spares availability and Mits Aus was very helpful the one time I had an issue. Compared to Jeep Aus no knowledge of the term "customer service".

I planned on a new Pajero, but I just couldn't do it, it's buying the same car as released in 1999. Only now it has bluetooth and a less shit nav system. I decided the risk on waiting for parts if there was an issue was worth it compared to buying a dinosaur. 8 months into ownership, and I am very happy with my decision. When the new Pajero comes out in 2016 then I will look at that again, but right now, it's not only not in the same ball game, it's not in the same league.
