Hello from Upstate NY

Hello,

Happy New Year to everyone.
First I have to say what a great forum this is, well done and thanks.
Right now I'm still in the shopping stage. I want to replace an 00 Yukon. Always wanted a Tahoe/Yukon, found one, now the wife won't drive it.....too big. She talked big until after we got it...what can I say?

I'm from Upstate NY and I've always owned at least one 4WD, this area is Jeep and Subaru country. You can't drive 2 miles without seeing at least 4 or 5 of either them:-)

My first choice after looking around the forums was a WJ Laredo with the 4.0 i6, from 04. A local Jeep dealer had one listed with 70K for around $10K. I stopped by, however it had "just" been sold. More like not updating the webpage.

I just found an 06 Overland Hemi at another Jeep dealer. This one has 94K, asking price is in the $15K range. However the carfax shows an excellent maintenance record, perfect actually. I'm going to take a ride down today and take a look.

So should I stick to my guns and wait for the right WJ to come along or not? I know both models seem to have their issues and it a dice roll either way. But as nice as the Overland seems to be in the pictures I wonder if I would just be looking for trouble down the road? I always though simple was better, less to go wrong.

Me I'm a semi retired heavy equipment/truck mechanic. Worked for fleets and highway departments for over 30 years. FWD, Oshkosh and Walters snowplows, 4WD is in my blood:-)
Always a Jeep fan. An old shop foreman I worked for in the 70's was a CJ2 fan, I blame Him, rest His Soul:-)

So what do you folks think? I would really appreciate your opinions.

Thanks and Best Regards
Jim

Re: Hello from Upstate NY

Welcome, I'm from upstate as well. I'm in Albany I bought my Jeep in Saratoga. Don't know how far upstate you are. I like the WK over the WJ. Better options imo. I went from a '97 to an '08 and love it. Wish I could have afforded a 2012 but verry happy with my chioce.

Thanks....I'm in the Town of Catskill. I feel the same about the 2012. Looked at them yesterday in person. Really nice. But I just can't do it.
I suppose a dumb question, but do you like the Hemi? I see the GC as the perfect size. Before the Yukon we had a 99 Envoy, just a loaded Jimmy actually. It had it's issues as they all do, but I loved it. Actually the salesperson that sold us the Yukon bought it. This Overland reminds me of it, about the same size and all the bells and whistles. I'm going to take a ride down to Ruge's now and look at it, see what kind of a deal I can get.

Thanks, appreciate your input.

Jim

Re: Hello from Upstate NY

welcome, i have a house upthere. question though have you checked the inventory over at albany aves begnal in kingston? they have that isolated used lot across the street from their dealership.

also id entertain private sales as well. i recently picked up another jeep (2005 5.7 v8 limited) with 100K for 9K cash. the guy wanted 12k- lol. dealers mark up the used prices a lot so thats why i say check out private sales. if the record keeping is good then take a dive.

also the HEMI engine.... not to be compared with anything "jimmy" or such... thats an insult. hahha j/k.

p.s dont entertain a v6.... get the v8 cause the 2-3 miles difference ur saving with the v6 doesnt help 95% of the time your driving- IMO. no power

gl!

Hello! Welcome to Jeep Garage

Unfortunately everyone on here is going to have their own opinion on which is better. I personally prefer the styling of the WK over the WJ but only your likes and opinions matter. Have fun looking at Jeeps and best of luck finding what's right for the wife and yourself!

Re: Hello from Upstate NY

Thanks for the replies everyone. Going tomorrow to drive the 06 Overland. They also have an 09 Overland there too. As it turned out I know the salesperson, he worked with my brother when he sold Subaru. Also I know the service manager.......every little bit helps. They also have an 09 Overland, I want to check that tomorrow too. They want around $10K more, but 34K for miles, with a good service record too.
Larry the sales guy left the door open on the 06 for us today so I could look it over in peace.....really nice. Wife likes it....not intimidated by it.

@SRTILLA....You got me there. I agree, actually after just sitting in the Overland today there is no comparison with it period. I agree on the 6, not worth it, besides I really want the Hemi now Even the wife agreed. I did send Bengal an email on 2 GC's never got a response. I like Ruges, they have an excellent reputation and now I have connections there too.
I have been checking for private sales too, but then I have to sell the Yukon myself. I know I'd get more. I really don't want to deal with it, but I would if the circumstances were right......good deal on an exceptional GC.

@FlyinRyan....I fly gliders....been thinking about Sport Pilot, but I started too old in the in the first place.....but I really would like to fly power too. Maybe I could do the low and slow thing.
I fly with a local club...makes it much less expensive and really a lot of fun.
