Hello, New Member, First Post and Question

Hello everyone,

I have an 04' Grand Cherokee SE. I am the original owner and it has only 85K miles on it. As this Jeep is in pretty solid shape and I really don't want a monthly payment right now, I thought I'd spruce the old gal up a bit and get some new wheels and rubber. I just did the brakes, shocks and control arms.

The clear on the OE wheels is shot and I am going to invest a few bucks in some nice aftermarket wheels and upgraded rubber. I've always felt that the OE tires were way too thin for the vehicle; since I am updating the wheels/tires I thought I would upsize as big as possible without modding the suspension.

I am going to upsize the wheels to either 17" or 18" (current OE size 225/75/16) and my question is what would be the max width tire I could use for either wheel diameter? I understand that to go above the 17" diameter I would have to lower the tire profile. I don't go off-road with this vehicle.

I was given the max "book size" from a local tire dealer for a 17" rim of 235/65/17. I wonder if I can go to a 245 in the 17" and how wide would the rim need to be...8"? As well I'd like the same info for the 18" wheel as well.

Thanks in advance guys!

Steve

you can go up to the 17's. I gave my aunt my stock wheels off my wk (2008) for her to put on her 02 wj. the tires on them are 245/65/17. they fit with no issues. my stock wheels are 17x7.5 with if I remember right, 30mm back space. you could go to a 8 inch wide wheel with either a 40 or 45 back space

Re: Hello, New Member, First Post and Question

I never received notification of your reply, so forgive my late response and thank you! I will keep that size in mind; however I'd really like to see if I can step up to 18's. According to a rep at Tirerack, I can go to an 18 incher with a 235-245/55/18. I am in no major hurry and I will continue my research - thanks guys!

I did a fast half baked Photoshop of the 18 inchers I like on my vehicle. I figure when I spring for a brand new GC in the next year or two, I'll keep this baby for winter and errands - I'm the original owner and it's too nice to sell me thinks.
