Hello-Noob needs guidance. Thanks!!

Hello all and thanks for the forum.

I am such an amateur it's sorta embarrassing. However, I've always wanted an older truck/jeep to enjoy and work on and I recently came across an opportunity to purchase one. I test drove a 76 CJ7 that has a rebuilt 350 (I didn't even know CJ7's were never made with a 350) with unknown miles in it. I started and there was some blue exhaust which got a lil better and for the most part ran well... for the 5 mins I drove around a parking lot. Obviously I was not going to buy without really running it longer on open (off)roads... but I was intrigued enough to look further into purchasing. I talked to a friend who knows a ton about all things mechanical (he's the one who informed me that CJs were never built with a 350) and he said be very weary.... Once you put an engine with that kind of power into a jeep that does not have original mechanics to match that power I could be taking over someone else's money pit. He also recommended I hit a forum up (ta dah!!). As for the body... I give it an A+ as he's put some recent money into it. I think he's only owned it for around a year and he say's he's put less than 100 miles on it. Just doesn't drive it and his wife cant. So..... I ask any and all.... What are the main questions I need answered regarding a 350 retrofit? And if I were to take it to a garage, what tests should be performed other than a compression test. I'm just putting this out there.... hope to hear some feedback. Thanks for reading.
