Hi from Scotland

Hi guys,

Just purchased a 12 month old 70th anniversary Compass as an economic runaround - had a Grand Cherokee as a second car some years go and loved it so when we needed another small 4x4 the Compass seemed ideal. No offroading planned but we are around 16 miles from the nearest city and winters can be tough in NE Scotland.

Anyway, I've noticed quite a lot of water condensation under the vehicle when it's running. Initially I thought it was a/c related but on testing it with the a/c switched off it was still fairly significant. The dealer has checked it out and informs me that it is the aircon and that the system kicks in whether it's switched on or off - only difference is you can control the internal temperaure.

At first I accepted this but on thinking it through I wonder if this is correct, as I've long understood that aircon usage increases your fuel consumption. So my question is - does the aircon system operate constantly creating condensation ?

Cheers
Doug

First of all, welcome to the garage, Doug! As for the A/C, yes it comes on whenever you put the defroster on regardless of whether you call for cool air or not. Not sure if the A/C shuts off after a set number of minutes but I suspect it does. In fact I think all curent cars work in the same way. I know both my Jeep and Nissan do.

Re: Hi from Scotland

Thanks for the reply, but my point is that the system is switched off and yet the aircon unit under the hood appears to be functioning - the mechanic tells me that the actual unit operates full time whether it is on or off in the cabin. It only stops operating when the air temperature is below a certain level.

That's what I can't figure regarding previous advice that using aircon increases fuel consumption and that you should switch it off when not needed, thereby saving fuel. Surely if it is constantly on then no impact on fuel usage would be seen.

Cheers
Doug
