I'm new and I need a place to put my left foot.

Hello,

I am new and have recently discovered what all of this Jeep stuff I didn't understand is.

Turns out it is mostly great except for a bit of rust and a terrible lack of power.

Good times!

The lack of power of the 4.0 is easily solved... just take out your wallet.
There are supercharger, turbocharger upgrades [e.g. Hesco], there are strokers
that run from do it yourself to crate engine 4.7 to Monster Forged 5.0 litre beasts.

Unless it has been replaced already, the stock exhaust manifold sucks. Hopefully the prior owner has replaced it and also hopefully added a catback exhaust that can help a bit.

But, what the 4.0 really has if in even halfway decent shape is low end torque and a flat horsepower curve.
By the time it gets spinning fast enough to do the valve rotation, it will pretty much be putting out as much as it can do.

For the power you would get from throwing money at an engine that starts at less than 200hp from the factory, I may be better suited to just put in a different engine entirely or live with the 4.0 as is.

Even a 50% increase in power only gets you to less than 300hp. Many minivans offer more than that today.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Jeep. It just seems a little too doggy at times. It's a Jeep thing. Now I understand.

Presuming you have more money than sense, check out the Monster Forged 5.0.

Then, go enjoy the fat torque curve of your 4.0--but make sure it is in good shape and it does seem to get a small bump from a good catback and if the factory exhaust manifold ends up cracking open, go for an aftermarket.
