Jeep newb coming to prowl
I'm in the market for a WJ 4.7 V8, and at the moment prowling forums to gain some knowledge, identify pitfalls and ideas to get the prospective WJ into over-landing shape. Although most people would advise against the WJ as the ideal over-landing vehicle, I'm determined to make it work for my purposes.
In South Africa this a challenge as most aftermarket goodies needs importing, with only a few quality manufacturers available locally. However, we do have brilliant support forums and a lot of knowledge to tap from it, and a few very capable local distributors / importers to help me on my way.
First things first, I still need to find the right WJ, which I'll hopefully be able to do within the next 4 to 6 months, giving me enough time to get my ducks in a row. It seems that the year model to go for would be the 2004 face-lift (or not?) and possibly a Laredo (less complicated) over a Ltd or Overland model.
From what I have read so far it seems there are a few items that will need attention right off the bat, such as: the drive shaft, at least a 2" lift, long range fuel tank, more robust recovery points, hi-lift jack points, possibly upgraded front and rear bumpers and rock sliders.
This will be a medium term project, as my time (and budget) is limited due to other commitments. Ideally I'm looking at a 3 year period, during which I'll be doing some get-away short trips to test, experience and enjoy the WJ.
Any advise and pointers will be much appreciated!
