New fella from Tennessee

Just wanna take a moment to introduce myself to all yall out there. my name is Will and I'm a college student in Nashville, Tennessee. I'm new to Jeeps and actually don't have one right now, but I'll be buying one shortly. I'm actually an import guy but I've always loved anything lifted and I'm tired of having a low and loud Honda so it's time to grow up. Looking at getting a ZJ to daily drive and have a little fun with. My dad has a WJ and my bro has a ZJ but they are both 2wd so I wanna be a little different haha. Anywho, if anybody has any suggestions on what to look for as far as common problems with ZJ's and what to watch out for it would be awesome!

Re: New fella from Tennessee

Welcome Will! Always check the rear door lower sills or doglegs as some people call them. They tend to rust out there first. Also the bottom lip of the rear hatch is usually a trouble spot as nobody cleans the drains. The rear wiper is usually locked up though no big deal to fix.If its got 120k or so see if it has any tranny work done cause they dont last much longer than 150k. In a ZJ I definately recommend the 5.2. Its a great motor that runs good and runs forever.

See I've always been told by mechanics to stick with the 4.0 rather than the 5.2. Plus my bros and my dads both have the 4.0 and haven't had a lick of trouble. Plus being in school V8's drink alot of gas so thats another reason I'm trying to stay away from the 5.2.

Re: New fella from Tennessee

Alright so I need some input from some of y'all out there. I'm in the process of buying my first Jeep and I have found a really good deal on one. 1995 Grand Cherokee Limited with 156,000 miles with a V8. Older lady owned and driven and they don't drive it that much. Flawless looking from the pics and I am going to see it in person tomorrow or Thursday. I'm not to keen on the V8 because I'd rather have a 6 cylinder to save a little gas but this deal is pretty good it looks like. She's only asking $2500 for it so I figure I can give $2300 for it and I'll be in pretty good shape. If I end up getting a V8, what kind of MPG's can I expect?

Oh yeah, here's a pic:

Anything I should look for specifically when I go look at it?

Re: New fella from Tennessee

I've heard/seen/read that the v6 obviously squeaks out a little more mpg, at 16.5mpg as compared to the 13.3 mpg for the v8 model.

Yeah that's about what I figured. I went to look at the one in the pic yesterday and they'd replaced the battery when I got there and so they were having some trouble with the security system so they couldn't get it started, so needless to say I didn't buy it. I'm still on the hunt for a 6 cylinder and I'm having no luck getting people in my area to reply to phone calls, texts and emails so it's beginning to get a little frustrating. Anybody in TN on here with a 6 cylinder 4x4 cherokee or grand cherokee for sale

Re: New fella from Tennessee

Headed out to buy a 96 ZJ 4.0 4x4 with 110k miles on it. Went and drove it and it drives great minus the out of balance tires and the interior is a little "rough" but then again it's a 15 year old car. Just needs a little TLC and it'll be better. It's a white laredo with a black leather interior. Seems a little odd (I come from the imports where nothing is leather and white cars usually don't have a black interior unless swapped) to me. The center console is a little loose and the headliner sags a smidge and of course it has a rip in the drivers seat but comes with seat covers! I'll post pics after I get it and get it cleaned up but I'm excited to be a new Jeep owner!
