Thumbs down New Guy

Just signed up here - drove my WJ over 100,000 miles and just got a 2006 WK with 30,000 miles.
Starting yesterday I got a bad clunk, knock, crunch that I can feel in my seat. It seems to be suspension, mostly happens when I start up after a stop, but also less noticable when going over road bumps/dips. Sounds like it is under me, but I haven't been under there yet to look.
It is a DEFINITE knock, sounds like a good tap with a ball pein hammer under the seat. Seat is tight, nothing loose in the cab.

Re: New Guy

This is on the WK Correct? Is the Clunk coming from the front?

Re: New Guy

your gonna have to do some detective work on the under carriage. Could be the swat bars, strut, suspension, driveshaft etc

Cool Re: New Guy

I replaced the rear shocks and have spent plenty of time under the vehicle - used a pry bar to try finding loose parts like the crossmember and also checked rubber bushings on transmission, all 4 rear links, panhard bar, engine mounts, front axle mounts, I have pushed and pulled, pried (moderately) and even hit with a rubber mallet - everything under the car. I have checked transfer case bolts, trans bolts and any others I could find. Nothing loose, cracked, bent, or shiny where it has rubbed. It seems to be suspension related but happens only part of the time. Size of bumps or dips in the road don't matter - happens on some little ones and some big ones, but not all the time. It is most noticable after a normal gentle stop and CLUNKS when I start to accelerate. Just like a hammer knock on the floorboards. Sounds like under the seat area or in the rear (But could probably be anywhere) Could it be struts hanging up and breaking loose? Any other ideas?
I'm lost here.
Oh yeah, driveshaft is good, universals are tight, normal play in drivetrain when in neutral.
I even jacked up each tire while the Jeep was on stands to compress the suspension - no noise, binding, or anything!!
Thanks for any help!

Re: New Guy

Didn't someone have this issue with differential bushings in the front diff?

283V8: Your 2nd post didn't state it, but there are rubber bushings for the transfer case. From another member, they are a PITA to replace, but apparently go bad also. IMHO, 30K miles seems too soon for that. In fact, 30K miles seems too soon for any of these suspension components to have failed.

Sounds far out, but I once had an exhaust hanger break and the exhaust pipe hit the body members, making the noises as you described. Drove me nuts for a month, until I found it (MOPAR also, BTW).

Sounds like you've been through most of the front suspension, now look for something less obvious, mid-chassis.

Re: New Guy

Can't really help, but I had exactly what you are describing happen with my '03 Ram 2500 4x4 Diesel work truck. I never did figure out what it was before I traded it in, but maybe look for something that isn't really specific to the WK?
