New JGC- diesel or Hemi?

Hi all, looking for advice here... Will do some freeway driving in So Ca, more % around town eventually in about a year after retirement, maybe some light towing- motorcycle, small fishing boat, etc.

I like the diesel, but the potential maintence issues concerns me vs the V8, also the claimed gas mileage on the diesel is nice... I'd probalbly get the V6 were it not for the single exhaust tip (on Limited).

Thanks.

The lack of dual exhausts is a killer, tis true.

The diesel is a new engine for Chrysler and is Italian . Those two factors alone might explain the rash of serious issues being reported across forums. You could get a good diesel or one of the absolute stinkers. As you're retiring soon, maybe its worth giving the diesel a shot - worst case scenario you'll get to bond with the dealer's service department and make new friends at FCA NA.

As the owner of a VW diesel that will be soon bought back due to the emissions scandal, I would be very leary of diesels right now. In addition to the vw/audi/porsche scandal, Mercedes/Opel/BMW have now admitted to emissions issues in Europe on their Diesels. Just today Fiat (current owner of Jeep and manufacturer of the 3.0 diesel) got called out for a possible defeat device. If the Jeep were to get pulled into a similar scandal, you would be stuck with a vehicle that would be greatly devalued, and possibly end up with less mileage/power.

The hemi on the other hand is a known quantity and there are millions of them out there. That is why I chose the hemi for the Jeep that will replace our VW.

So why not get a V6 Overland? They have dual exhaust. Use the money you're saving with the V6 and get a nicer package and what you want (dual exhaust). No brainier IMO

If you plan on doing any towing at all make sure you get 4x4. That way it comes with tow pkg, is rear load leveling and lowers the vehicle at highway speeds.

I've had a 14 Overland Hemi and a 15 Overland Pentastar V6. Love them both.

How so? The diesel is a $5k option. The Overland isn't $5k more than a limited... So it's the same money.

Re: New JGC- diesel or Hemi?

Based upon the description of your intended usage a Diesel engine may not be the best use of your disposable income. Armchair Internet warriors and dis-information dissenters aside, the diesel is best served by those that will see extensive highway miles and/or trailer towing. The turbo-diesel operates best when driven under load and/or hard. Normal maintenance issues are minimal beyond oil changes every 10000 miles, and adding DEF as its consumed. The other thing to consider is the time to recoup the extra cost of the engine option. When fuel prices were at $4/gallon for regular gasoline the engine would of paid for itself within 15 months v/s the Hemi, and within 45 months v/s the Pentastar.
