05 GC Ltd. electrical problem

Hi Too all:

First off I must thank all who welcomed me to JG.org. Now for my tale of whoa. Approximately 2 yrs. ago all of a sudden all the dash lights & symbols would flash for a few seconds. Then the ck. engine light & one other symbol, the TSP light or "Electric brake system needs servicing" stay on. Then just the ck. engine light would remain on. It would stay on but then go out after driving at least 20 minutes & not come on for about a month or so later. The dealer said the codes it threw were stored codes & nothing useful could be obtained from them. They replaced around 5-6 modules but to no avail. Fortunately for me I only had to pay a deductible once. Now, since about a month & a half, it has changed its M.O. Everything on the dash goes out, no tach, speedo., signals, radio, & none of the warning symbols. When all becomes well the check engine light doesn't come on either. As of JUN/09 the dealer I had been doing business w/ for almost 20 years lost their franchise w/ Chrysler & Jeep so I had to find another to go to. This newer dealership service manager said it could be an "electronic ignition node &/ or the ignition switch". But he admits it is only a gut feeling not the computer or any DTC pointing him to the problem. Also it has been over 2 weeks & he is still unable to get the parts. Sorry for such a long winded explanation & any help would be appreciated.

Regards & thanks again, Vince

Re: New Member

I still think it is a loose ground. I had a similar incident happen with my 04 dodge Ram and it turned out it was a loose ground but they replaced the instrument gauge cluster, modules, etc before hand trying to figure out what it was.

You may very well be right. Where do you think the loose ground is. Give me your thoughts & I'll tighten the sucker-up...

Thanks, Vince

Re: New Member

Welcome aboard Vince!

Post the codes if you have them.

There are 3 sections to look in

Active
Pending
Stored

By cross referencing all the codes we may be able to find a common cause in all of them and get you on a path to a fix or solution.

A ground does sound like the culprit though.

Re: New Member

it is indeed the ignition switch or module. You are about the 10th person I have heard this happening with and everytime it was with the ignition switch or module

Mine does the same thing. All the warning/idiot lights on the dash light up, speedo dies, tach dies, "service elec brake system" displays in the EVIC. Does this several times for a few seconds every so often. I went all last spring/summer without it happening and just a couple weeks ago it did it again on a few occasions. Very intermittent. Of course, several dealers I have taken it to can't fix it because they can't duplicate the problem. Because of all the problems I have had with this GC and the fact that the dealers can't ever seem to "duplicate" a problem and fix it this will probably be the last Chrysler I will buy. Makes me sad because I love Jeeps and have had many of them but this one is by far one of the worst vehicles I have ever owned. Sorry this post was of no help to your problem. Just had to vent.

Mike:

I know exactly how you feel. I've had Jeeps since 1986 & this problem has been the most exasperating. With its age & mileage it is time to trade but the area dealers have no or very little inventory. I would like to see the 2011 Jeeps that are due out in JUN/ 2010 but this problem has me at the end of my rope. I'm seriously considering the Honda CR-V/ EX-L which is loaded to the hilt & for the cost is no where near what a Jeep w/ the same options would be. I hate like HELL to go foreign, especially Japanese, but there are to many pluses pulling me that way. Best of luck getting yours straightened out.

Regards, Vince
