New member...Brake light problem

Hi...
Hopefully someone can help with this.

My brake lights and turn signals work fine during the day but at night when i turn on the head lights i have problems.

as soon as i turn on the night head lights the left rear light comes on but the right.
When i hit the turn signal both work fine.
When i hit the brakes the left light goes out but the right and top rear work.

i recently put in a new right rear assembly

any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix?

Re: New member...Brake light problem

Without being familiar with the car, all I can suggest is that it sounds a bit like a dual filament globe inserted backwards. Is it a combined stop/tail globe? If so, remove it and check it was inserted properly.

Cheers,
Steve

Also check the earth wire for the lights. When the earth is open, the current is passing through the other light to get to earth. If the other light already has power (lights on) it will not get to earth.

Re: New member...Brake light problem

Welcome to the garage.
Which jeep do you have? On the WJ we see this problem a lot. Its caused by bad contact of the light bulb sockets. Bend the copper color tabs out a bit to restore the contact. Sometimes you even have to bend the other side on the lamp assy out to get it to work.

Re: New member...Brake light problem

Thanks. I will try all of these ideas. Or just drive during the day time.

What is the earth light?

BTW...it is a Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2000
I live in Mexico near the ocean so I wonder if salt air could have any impact.

Re: New member...Brake light problem

Mozzie didnt say earth light. But what he ment to say was to check the ground wire.
But since you have a wj, im almost sure that the problem is bad electrical contact between the light sockets and the circuit board.
