New member - in Australia + question re rims and tyres

Hi all,
We're just in the process of buying a jeep overland. Can get 18 inch wheels instead of 20's if we want. We had a jeep about 8 years ago and got punctures when on some of our rocky roads out west (also a dented rim from a washout I didn't see even though we were only travelling at about 60 km/hr) SO my question is which which wheel size should we get? We maybe do currently 70% highway, 20% rough dirt roads, 10% off track travel, but that will probably change as we will retire soon, so more dirt roads. Some say if you travel slowly, 20's are ok. When the tyres wear out we will get the strongest wall ones available.
Nice to be able to join Jeep Garage, thanks, .

Welcome to the forum.

Personally, I think you'd be better off with the 18 inch wheels. You'll get a smoother ride on and off road, less of a chance of damaging a wheel and there are far more tire choices available for the 18's than the 20's.

Short answer is yes 18 fit not sure if the dealer will swap them or not for you

18 much better for off road use and cheaper and better tryes available
Good luck

Great! Thank you for such quick replies! 18 inch it is then. I think the dealer said they will swap them for free. They then get to use the 20 inch to "dress up" a base model. Cheers Allan

Bear in mind that the original 18" tyres are rubbish and will partially defeat the purpose of the exercise. Consider negotiating your choice of tyres into the deal.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: New member - in Australia + question re rims and tyres

Hi Allanernest. Welcome to the forum. I have an Aussie 2014 Overland Diesel wit BOTH the factory 20in/Kuhmos and the factory 18in rims with Cooper Discoverer AT3s. I normally ride on the 20s round town and swap to the 18s when heading on a trip with some off-roading.
I find the on-road ride on the 18s is noticeably smoother than the 20s (more sidewall compliance) and of course the 18s are heaps better/safer/more reliable off-road.
If it wasn't for the wife wanting the 'look' of the 20s round town, I'd leave the 18s on full time.
So I heartily agree with the recommendation to go with 18s for your Overland and you won't be disappointed. The Coopers AT3s are very good, but you have many choices depending on your usage and budget.
Good luck and enjoy!!

More availability of tyres for the 18s too, if you are going to remote places.
