New member, still learning!

Hey there!

My name is Dani. I've had a 2003 Jeep GCL, for several years now. It has been great to me. As it is adding up in miles I'm starting to get into more updating parts and maintenance myself.

Please forgive me if I do not know much jargon or terminology but I have done some DIY tasks and am eager to learn more as my trusty girl ages.

I'll start off with my most recent endeavor. I've been troubleshooting some shifting issues with my automatic transmission. A few months ago it started shifting sluggishly then just stopped shifting into OD altogether. ATF is fine, not low, not ugly in color. We took a shifting switch out of a box under the hood, and I can shift it manually. If I understand correctly I need to change my Governor Pressure Solenoid and Governor Pressure Sensor. I need to order said parts, apparently they come together, but I need the part numbers. Any ideas how to get these so I can get them ordered and replaced? 4.0L, V6, 4x4

Thanks,

"The very novice DIY mechanic"

Re: New member, still learning!

You may have trouble trying to find parts for your v6 4.0 as it is an I6 not a V6, so you could start there. As far as the part numbers, I wish I could help you more, but maybe I already did a little bit... Also mine with 160k miles had no such issues so although I just changed all the fluid out in it and the filter, "Royal Purple Max ATF btw", I am no help with the sensors..

Welcome to the club though, and good luck on your jeep.

Re: New member, still learning!

Welcome to the garage.
Did you check for fault codes set, that you came to the conclusion that the governor pressure solenoid and sensor must be changed?
For any electrical transmission parts i always go to the next guys:
Dodge "RE" Model Borg Warner Pressure Solenoid Kit 2000 and Up Trucks
They work with OEM equipment for a good price. Just confirm with them that the parts on their page are the right ones for your transmission, but it says all 42RE from 2000 and on.
They also sell a heavy duty kit overthere.

We did look for codes. I can't remember which ones popped up but my engine light didn't glow until we took the shift switch out of the box under the hood. It's manually drivable right now. Honestly I think we came to this conclusion from another forum. I was worried my tranny was going while I was 4 hours from home;-) it has 140k miles. Should i replace that switch too? I'll check out the other threads. Honestly I only want to drain this pan once, so anything I can replace I will!

I was thinking of buying this, think I found this site on another thread? Looks all inclusive (way cheaper than I was finding at the shop!)

Re: New member, still learning!

Shift switch under the hood? Are you talking about the tranmission control relay?
The kit you want to buy would be a good idea, it has some more items as the kit i had mentioned from the same shop.

Re: New member, still learning!

Should not be necessary. The relay can normally survive the live of the jeep and would it one day give a problem, then you can easily change it.
