New Owner confused by Sport Mode

How's everybody doing? I'm a 2-month owner of a new 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited, Cashmere Pearlcoat. This is the perfect color for me, since I've owned every other one in the color wheel.

One thing that really confuses me is the sport mode. The owner's manual doesn't explain it much at all, and Google searches don't help me much. Every once in awhile I accidentally knock it into this mode and it freaks me out. Anybody out there that can put it in first grade English for me?

Love that I am a part of this forum and am hoping to learn so much!

Re: New Owner confused by Sport Mode

As I understand it, it does the following:

Lowers the ride height
Keeps it in gears longer
Turns off stability control
Changes the drive bias to more rear

But I'm probably wrong.

Ha, that already told me 4 things more than I knew, so I'm sure you're right! It's a start, anyway. Now to figure out how it works. Thanks!

Lowers the ride height - on models with QL
Keeps it in gears longer - for upchanges when accelerating shift points change
Turns off stability control what! dont think so.
Changes the drive bias to more rear - yes

On mine, a 2013 V8, a light comes on within the tach that says "ESC off". What does that mean?

This is from the online manual:
Quote:
Sport – Dry weather, on-road calibration. Only available
in 4WD High range. Performance based tuning
that provides a rear wheel drive feel but with improved
handling and acceleration over a two-wheel
drive vehicle. The Electronic Stability Control will set
to allow more driver control of vehicle while maintaining
safe handling controls. The vehicle will lower (if
equipped with Air Suspension) to Aero Mode in High
Range. 4WD Low is not available in SPORT mode, if
4WD Low is selected the Selec-Terrain™ will automatically
switch back to AUTO.
I think an A- is in order.

Re: New Owner confused by Sport Mode

2013 and 2014 are very different.

The most noticeable thing that sport mode does on a '14 is change the shift map.. it'll generally be in lower gears, and it'll downshift more aggressively when slowing down. If you have QL, it will also drop into aero mode.

Maybe a B+, for not being aware that the 2014 and newer are a tad different than the 2013.

Good point though that it does depend on suspension. Thar's a writeup at mopar.
