power outlet

Hi
New Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited owner of two days and after some information.
I was told by an ARB employee that the 12 volt outlet in the back of the vehicle will not run a fridge and would keep blowing fuses.
I have an Engels 40 litre that I want to use but don't want to carry an extra power source in the back of the Jeep.
Has anybody put the extra battery in the vehicle under the passengers seat, told by Jeep salesman it would fit there so if anyone can give me some answers it would be great .
Thanks in advance.
Sid

Re: power outlet

I haven't finalised my cargo setup and on my last trip I ran my fridge off the rear power socket. Ten days later, the fuse gave up... probably because the wiring behind the socket is very undersized for the task. The voltage losses result in a higher current draw, which tends to continue in a downward spiral.

If you don't have Quadralift there's a decent space under the front passenger seat. There's been a few fitouts detailed here, and at least one was located under the spare wheel under the car.

To be honest, the limitations have left me unenthusiastic about finishing the project... but I'll probably be using an AGM battery (or two) in the void between the rear seat back and the fridge. Two might allow better space utilisation...

It's important to be clear about your expectations regarding the temperature and duration the fridge is to be able to run, and in what ambient temperature. Only then can you determine the battery size, and where you can locate it.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: power outlet

Mines going in on Monday because my rear 12v socket doesn't work at all. Ended up plugging the Waeco in the front outlet and putting it on the back seat!. I tried to check fuses but they'd given me the MY12 manual. I downloaded a new one and found fuse 90/91 is the correct unit 20a.

The service manager told me the wiring is only about 3mm and I see it's only rated for 13a

As you say hardly up to the task of running a fridge.

Re: power outlet

Use a better socket type too. Ciggy plugs back out, which could result in warm beer.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: power outlet

Does your Ltd have a mains power inverter outlet? (Mine is on the hump under the front console, facing the 2nd row of seats - Overland not Ltd).

If so, you could do a workaround by using a mains-to-cigarette lighter converter between the inverter outlet and the fridge.
