Transmission problems

I have jeep grand Cherokee loredo. When I go around a curve with a little speed my jeep will stay in one gear usually second but not always and that's not all it will only accellerate to 40 mph and then quit..... I can push on the gas all I want but it wii not raise the rpms or anything it will just go 40. Someone tolld it might me a solenoid but I'm not sure what to ask for. Please help before my wife divorces me
