Exclamation Undercarriage Noise

Jeep 2004 Grand Cherokee/Limited Edition/v-8/Quad Trac II Excellent condition
Purchased 9-2014 w/64,000 Miles Currently 80,000 Miles

Over the past few months the Jeep has developed strange rattle, more like a rumble vibration or a box of rocks when going over a bump, or rough road. Hard to isolate it, front or rear and I can sometimes feel a vibration in the floor. A

I have a trusted mechanic who I have dealt with for 30 years, honest and competent. He has had it on the lift and can't find anything obviously wrong or loose, worn or anything else.

I am not a mechanic but we have replaced the sway bar links and bushings in the rear and now front. That has made things feel tighter but there is still this rumbling when you go over a bump. Can't come up with a better description than a box of rocks or similar to my idea of a shaft banging inside of a casing. But the rumble is very substantive.

I wish I had more to go on but am hoping this might ring a bell with someone who has had a similar experience and might know of a fix or what could be wrong. Otherwise everything remains great with this 12 year old beauty.

Prior to the noise starting the left front hub assembly was replaced.

Re: Undercarriage Noise

Welcome to the garage.
The rear shock bolts are well known to cause a rattle sound on some WJs. Seems that the boss is a bit too thin. There are some other threads about this, with the P/N of a better bolt.
Also known to cause rattle is the upper rear control arm center pivot bolt or the control arm bushings, but with the last ones, the steering also becomes vague.

Talking Re: Undercarriage Noise

Thanks again for the inputs and ideas. The mystery has been solved. The noise was coming, via trial and error and eliminating candidates, from the right front caliper. There is a bushing that had worn, after replacing it the Jeep is tight as a drum and not a brake drum..... I love this Jeep and couldn't have it sounding like an old worn out clunker.
