Why are parts so hard to find and uber expensive?

Love my Jeep. Don't ever want to get rid of it. But Damn! it's hard to get parts for it that isn't back ordered 3 weeks or more across the country!

I've got a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a 4.7 V8 engine and the ever troublesome QuadraDrive transmission.

Current problem is the car overheating, Engine light on, computer says problem with the cooling system and then gives along list of probabilities. Real helpful. I do know that the fan is not kicking in. I had my radiator replaced a couple of years ago. But the fan not kicking in is new development.

Mechanic say's it's a problem with the fan solenoid.says that you cannot replace individual parts anymore but you have to get the whole assembly. The entire assembly including wire harness costs $1100. That doesn't include labor. Any ideas where I can get these parts and instructions on how to install\replace?

Re: Why are parts so hard to find and uber expensive?

Welcome to the garage.
The hydraulic cooling fan on our jeep is a nice setup, but unfortunately jeep doesnīt sell any parts for it anymore then the whole assy. Now jeep is not the manufacturer of this fan setup, but it is Valeo and jeep is not the only customer who uses this fan motor. Ford uses a comparable hydraulic motor on the Lincoln LS and they sell the same control solenoid separately. The only downside is that the connector is different then on our jeeps. So or you will have to get the Ford connector and splice it in, or connect the wires in an other way to the solenoid. This solenoid replacement will work if you have the P1499 code. Be aware that also a blown fuse of the O2 sensor heater will give you the same fault code. Many times an O2 sensor wire touches a hot exhaust part and shorts out, causing the fuse to blow.
There is also a difference between the jeep solenoids over the years, some have a two pin connecor with the ground wire going directly to the solenoid body, while other years have a three pin connector.
Here are some to sell on e-bay: | eBay, or here: http://www.partswebsite.com/fordsupe...W4Z3783CA.html. The partnumber is: xw4z-3783-ca, just google it and you will find many hits.
I have never tried this setup myself, so canīt tell you my own experience, but it was tried before by others and works well.
