Re: slim ballast vs regular ballast...... what do you like and why!

I think different manufacturers sell different products, for example I have both "regular" sized ballasts for my Lows and for my Fogs from different vendors (manufacturers), and my Low beam HID kits ballasts have tabs on them to fasten them to the car with screws but have the extra "box" which I think is the ignighter, though my fog light HID ballasts are just square all around with no way to mount them directly with screws but they do not have the extra box (ignighter maybe?).

Me personally I would rather have a product that I can screw down to the car, I figure I can always splice in extra wiring if needed because of location. If the ballasts do not have mounting holes I would rather it be as small as possible and would go with the slim ballasts even if it comes with the extra little box thing because that can be zip tied down easy enough. Because of the size and weight of the "regular" ballasts I dont trust it being held on by only zip ties. I just installed the H10 HID kit in my WK for my fogs and there are no mounting holes in the ballasts and they did not come with brackets, so I made my own brackets using electrical junction boxes from HomeDepot for brackets, I screwed them to the cars frame and placed the ballasts inside then screwed the covers on the junction boxes. I had to cut away some of the boxes for the ballast wires so it seats properly but now its not going anywhere, and I dont have to be paranoid about plastic zip ties breaking or melting and my ballasts falling and being dragged on the road while driving.

I dont think anything should be held onto a car with zip ties or 3M tape or velcro unless its just used to secure wiring, which auto manufacturers do all the time.

Re: slim ballast vs regular ballast...... what do you like and why!

This is where I mounted my ballasts for my low beams in my 2000 WJ.

Left Arrow: On top of the fuse box beside the battery

Right Arrow: there is a small space between the fanshroud and the Airbox, immediately adjacent to the headlight.

I have mine in the same spots. Except the one on the drivers side is mounted closer to the fender because I used the factory ground.

Re: slim ballast vs regular ballast...... what do you like and why!

My "regular" ballasts for my lows that have mounting holes in them I mounted using SS screws, the drivers side right on the inside fendor next to the battery and the other passenger side I actually mounted to my CAI metal sheild thing.

My "regular" fog light ballasts that did not have mounting tabs I mounted inside metal junction boxes screwed down into the cars metal framing down near the radiator. I brought a ballast with me to HomeDepot, bought the smallest electrical junction boxes they would fit in, then installed them on the car and put the covers on the boxes to hold the ballasts. Because the boxes are slightly larger than the ballasts I drilled pilot holes thru the covers and inserted flat tip screws in tightened down to hold the ballasts in place from moving around. "Home made" brackets for about 5 bucks. I still have to paint them, for rust issues and to make them blend in.

Re: slim ballast vs regular ballast...... what do you like and why!

If you're spending money on something from a company, imo nothing should be "home made" to make it work. It should be right the first time, right out of the box. JMO

I agree. The ballasts I received were square boxes with no mounting tabs. I emailed the vendor askig if they had mounting brackets and was told no, and to just zip tie them on into place.

I have seen many posts and pictures where people did just zip tie the ballasts onto the frame, but I am anal and wasnt comfortable with that. So I thought of a way to secure it using screws and small metal boxes. For the price I got the HID kit for, and for how good it works, I am not complaining at all. I would of paid double the price for the HID fig kit I got from Tony. No worries.

Appreciate the kind words Tim.

By the way, I found you a set of the ballast mounts, will send them with the relays and spare bulbs.

Re: slim ballast vs regular ballast...... what do you like and why!

Anyone have pics of the slim ballast mounted? I have a bunch of people complaining because although they are thinner, you have to mount the ballast and the small box that ignites the bulbs, making it one more thing to mount... .anyone have pics of how they mounted them?
