Just purchased a new Laredo and want to start modding it for offroad. First step is a lift I'm thinking bilstein 5100s or 5160s if they fit. And maybe some skid plates.

Is there anything else I need to do to get it ready? Thanks for your help.

Jhodgman,

This is your daily driver, correct? Seriously think about what percent of the time you will really be spending "offroad".

What the Bilstein 5100's allows you to do is pre-load (adjust) the shock for better ride control for the type of driving your doing. It's not really going to raise the vehicle. It also doesn't change the drivetrain/suspension articulation points, which is good on independent suspension vehicles. Overall shock length will be within about 1/2" of the stock shock.

As for the 5160's with the remote reservior, these would be overkill on a stock rig, you're not going to be pushing the Jeep so hard that you'll be worried about heat buildup in the shock. Plus, you'd have to find someplace to mount the reserviors.

My 2 cents... Spend your money on recovery points, protection, and tires first.

The only lift kit is the RRO 2.5", however there's mention that a few others will be on the market in a few months. I believe ARB and an OEM kit.

If you're going to do some "serious" off-road, you may want to look into the control arms, skid plates, and bumper from RRO as well.

So question, RRO has their lift kit and from what ive read the reason no one has gone bigger then what they offer is becouse the axle would not be long enough and the stock parts couldnt handle anything more. But what i dont get is if the package with the air lift can travel from -2 to +4 inches with no problem why cant we.

Ive been mind f_ _ king this thing since i bought the jeep.

I notice that my shock will top out if i go fast over speed bumps , which is so lame. Theres no travel whats so ever lol. Thats what im working on

As far as the air ride system i still need to play with one and see how it acts in the dirt. Im thinkn at the highest setting there is basically no droop left in the shock. Its really just for ground clearance. I dont even think u can drive over 20mph on highest setting.

The top end kit i will hav will hav axles and spindles, upper control arms lowers etc. should b interesting. Ill b starting a thread in a month when i get the rear coil i designed from the coil manufacturer. King shocks coil front and smooth body rear is being worked on now.
