Question Advice needed, offroading my 07 wk

Hi guys,

I'm very new to offroad world. It's been 6th month since I bought my 07 CRD WK. I understood that offroad abilities were limited by its ground clearance. Although I might only do some mild offroading : tracks of north Africa, Scotland, Iceland... (yes I'm french...).

I have some constaints:
  • Wheels must not stick out or very little (I could get fines for that)
  • I have to keep my factory wheels and tires as we have here a mandatory control every two years and the vehicle must be stock (spacers forbidden but OME setup might be OK)
  • I only have 10 cm roof clearance in the garage box I'm renting (living in a flat, I'm a parking lot mechanic...) so the lift should keep under 10 cm
I figured out various options:
  • Stock height/Bilsteins HD or Koni/front levelling spacer/AEV Pintlers/ 265-65 R17 or 255-70 R17
  • OME MD / AEV Pintlers/ 265-70 R17 or 255-75 R17 (those are hard to find)
Do you think they will meet my constraints?

Other questions
Does it look that awkward to have OME MD with my stock 245-60 R18 tires? (I could answer my question by putting my car on floor jacks but picks should be easier). My WK is my daily drive.
I have a set of Good Year Ultragrip (winter tyre) in 245-60 R18 and Toyo Open Country H/T (mounted). We have here in Paris one or two days of snow and once a year I go skiing, I think it's not worth keeping the winter tyres?
What is the handling of the WK with A/T tyres under snow?

Thanks guys, I'll appreciate any help,

Just to throw out an answer to your tire question, yes the WK looks retarded if you dont have tires proportionate to the lift, and its a beast in snow with good tires, an absolute beast.

Re: Advice needed, offroading my 07 wk

I don't think you need the winter tires if you only use them once or twice a year, trade them up for something more rugged.
I think the OME will look and perform well with any size tire as long as you have a nice thread.

What's the limit on the tire sticking out from the fender?

Re: Advice needed, offroading my 07 wk

Technical error for the paste thing, nothing to do with me.

Thanks guys for your answers.

Ok for the winter tyres, just waiting for the winter season so they get more value before I sell them. 245/60/R18 might not be easy to sell...

I don't know precisely what is the limit for sticking out of the fenders as its strictly forbidden here. We could say that the limit is when you wonder if it's really sticking out or not.

I would appreciate any detailled picture (rear or front) with 265/70/R17 with 1.5" spacers stock rim or AEV Pintlers no spacers and 265/70/R17 stock rim no spacers.

I have a quite big quantity of pictures collected from here and other forums. But just one showing what I'm looking for (see enclosed).
Stock rims/1.25 spacers/BFG AT/OME HD.
Wheel offset seems to me reasonable.

That looks like 5.3'' backspacing, Mine are -12 offset and stick out about 2'' from fenders which look great on a superlifted Jeep, not sure that would be ok on a 2'' lift since you can damage your rear fenders during off-road. Might have to consider 0 offset with 5'' backspacing maybe..

Re: Advice needed, offroading my 07 wk

For the moment the only wheels I found in France (shipping costs are too high from US) are :
o 17x8" 20mm offset steel wheel (looks like Cragar soft 8')
o another 17x8" 10mm offset steel wheel
o AEV Pintlers
o Stock wheels with spacers.
AEV are 22 lbs vs 39lbs for steel wheels.

By the way it'll be OME springs/shocks/struts
