West Rollins Pass...Pics!!!!

I had planned on driving through Kansas Thursday until I saw the 100+ degree temps throughout the state, so I decided to do a trail I had planned on doing next week instead. The road to West Rollins Pass could be done in a stock SUV or a car like a Subaru Outback until the road ends at a shelf road that used to be part of a discontinued railroad route that is gated off due to potential rock slides. There is a rougher road that goes over the slide area that gets closer to the Needle's Eye tunnel that is also closed to through traffic.

This as close as the DUBK gets to the the West entrance of the tunnel.

For some strange reason someone took the time to erect this on top of the tunnel

Re: West Rollins Pass...Pics!!!!

Travel through the tunnel is unsafe, however this road that goes over the ridge in the second picture connects East and West Roliins Pass, but there are two different sets of barricades that block the route.

Re: West Rollins Pass...Pics!!!!

Great pictures, I love the old mining trails and roads out west. Terrible what is happening with the wild fires this year, I saw some pictures along the front range that had so many source points it really made you wonder if there wasn't a serial arsonist running amok out there.

On the rock wall you found at the top, I don't know for sure what those are or who takes the time to build them. When I lived in Montana would occasionally see similar things at the top of near the top of high points in the mountains there. When I lived in Northern California and first climbed Mt. Shasta I ran into several sets of them at about the 11,000 foot mark. I always assumed someone built them as some sort of wind break if they were camping at that point. Seems like a lot of work to do in the thin air to me...

There is speculation about an arsonist. I am pretty much a mellow, easy going guy...BUT, if some useless mouthbreather is running around setting these fires, especially the Waldo Canyon fire, this person needs to be dragged through the street by his/her ankles while their victims throw rocks, rotten vegetables, excrement, and etcetera, then tossed into the fire he/she started.

I swear, if they are not probing us where the Lord...or, uh Evolution(whatever you are into) split us, then they leave behind strange rock formations to confound us.
