Re: What do I need to know before I lose my off roading virginity

I dont really feel "in that" is putting someone down when he is pointing at a stock grand cherokee with no recovery points, stock tires etc... add in he is in a group of 1 vehicle and clearly is not comefortable with the area... he gave you a map and a priceless bit of information, while poking a bit of fun at the factory grocery getter trying to offroad.

Like I said I did more difficult trails in my jeep and had SO much fun, but it was becasue I was in a group, I had a spotter when required and even though it was never needed I had rigs to pull me out if required. I drive past these trails whenever I go to the beach, and part of me says swing in and have a bit of fun on the way to the beach, and the other part of me says it would be no fun without the security of other rigs and spotters.

Re: What do I need to know before I lose my off roading virginity

Yeah I totally agree. It wasn't malicious and he was with his two young sons. Quite frankly I was a little shocked at how intense the whole place was, I mean my stocker was clearly embarrassing and it really just looked like a land of wranglers, nothing else. I'm starting to have some anxiety about lifting up my daily driver and taking it out. I feel like I'd freak out too much and worry I'd break something.

Re: What do I need to know before I lose my off roading virginity

If you are with a good group and have good spotters , they should be able to get you through most things .

a few tips
1 dont use the skinny petal unless you absolutely must. alot of people believe that whenyou get out there ,at every rock or bump you have to gun it.

spinning wheels and hopping will only lead to breakage . If you feel the jeep start bucking get off the petal.

2. let your jeep grow with your experience . I seen people with a super built rig but cant drive it for crap. just like building a house, If you have a good foundation ,the house will stand

3. always remember that everyone once started stock ( or close)

4. Respect the land you drive on!! on every trip we took , we would take trash bags . Not just for our own garbage but at stops , we would collect things left behind for others. If this is not done ,soon we will have nowhere to ride.

I would not be to concerned by what the wrangler guy said . Its just alittle bit of trail fun. dont look into it anymore then that .

Oh , there is always a chance of breaking things when offroading . If you know your jeep , you will be able to feel or hear when you are hurting it ,so dont have the stereo blasting .This way you can feel or hear if something is going bad
So just have some extra parts ( u joints , ball joints ,tie rods ,Etc) and tools with you, not only if you need them but if someone else might. This will gain you friends and trail credit ( if needed)

One last thing . for the first 10-15 miles after the ride ,when you are on your way home, Just listen to the jeep on the road. If something is loose you should hear it .

Re: What do I need to know before I lose my off roading virginity

One more thing ...... get some WD40 or a few cans of Pam cooking spray and spray the underside of the jeep .
The mud will not stick to anyplace you have sprayed . ( this saves thousands of swear words due to dirt in the eye later )

We used to keep it in a garden sprayer. This way we can buy it in gallons.
