WK2 Lower Front Guard

The current Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2) is a luxury SUV that is surprisingly capable off-road, but if you're going to venture off-road, there are a few places that need additional protection.

Chief Products is doing our best to address these needs with our current line of products for the WK2.
WK2 Recovery Hook
WK2 Recovery Point
WK2 Sump Protection Plate

The WK2 Lower Front Guard is one of our latest products, and it's designed to protect the critical area at the lower front of the WK2. The lower Radiator Core, ACC Camera, Windshield Washer Bottle and Air Suspension Controller are all critical components that require protection off-road. We've designed the WK2 Lower Front Guard to sit behind the OEM air dam, so you can maintain OEM appearance on-road, while gaining full off-road protection for this area while off-road.

We don't have any pricing yet, but we've completed our first prototype and begun in the field testing. Depending on the results of our testing I expect release in the next 1-2 months.

In the meantime, I thought I'd provide some behind the scenes development information for the passionate WK2 owners of this forum. If you've got any questions, post them in this thread and I'll do my best to answer them.

Here are a few details:
  • It will come with an option for ACC Camera equipped WK2s.
  • We're not currently satisfied with the design of the ACC Camera Guard, so we'll be redesigning it to better protect the camera, while also not sticking out as far.
  • The WK2 Lower Front Guard will come in several pieces to reduce shipping costs and make installation easier.

I've included a few photos, but please keep in mind these are prototypes, not finished products.

Cheers,
Bill

Re: WK2 Lower Front Guard

It's looking good, Bill! I like the idea that it sits behind the plastic bumper cover. There is no telling what the new guard would do to the aerodynamics and wind noise at high speed. Perhaps the plastic bumper cover could be trimmed and modified so as not to clip into the body as it now does but to clip directly onto the new guard with something like quick release bonnet pins. It could also be split into right and left halves for easier storage.

Re: WK2 Lower Front Guard

Instead of the horizontal slots, how about vertical slots to set off the grill slots. You could also add a few judiciously placed circular holes for effect, like this maybe ○.|||||||.○

Hey Bob,

We are currently testing how the guard effects aerodynamics, vehicle cooling (hard when it's cold outside) and wind noise. So far everything looks great!

Those are some great ideas. Making the removal/install process and storage of the lower front air dam easier is something I think all WK2 owners would appreciate. We've taken a look at it, but haven't found any viable solutions yet.

Cheers,
Bill

Hey Bob,

With all of these ideas, we're going to have to put you on our staff! LOL!

We hadn't considered the circular holes for effect, but we had already moved to 7 vertical slots for non-ACC equipped WK2s.

Cheers,
Bill

Ideas are a dime a dozen. Making them work in a simple cost effective way takes real talent. That's where you come in.

Re: WK2 Lower Front Guard

I think I'd be looking at leaving the airdam at home if going on a trip that involved offroading. I'm still not convinced aero is a real issue considering bullbars have a similar arrangement around this area and previous models have similar guards.

Sure, might add a little to fuel consumption, but otherwise....?

Congratulations Benn0! You've just been nominated to test drive the Jeep without an air-dam to determine at what speed the front starts to float. My tyres are rated to only 180kph so I'm OK if it's above that.

It's a pity you can't try it with the air-dam back to see what the difference is. I might try it myself... if the missus will let me.

Re: WK2 Lower Front Guard

Bill, I have a question... Is the fascia the same for Overland and Summit once you are in the lower portion of the front clip? I know the Overland is supposed to be easily removed. I was curious if your lower section here would fit right up to the Summit front clip????

thanks
