ZJ builders

I don't see a lot ZJ threads. So I thought I'd make one to talk about mods on the 93-98 grand Cherokee. I'm Rollin in a 95, 2 inch lift on 32's. Factory pozi/dana 35 rear dana 30 with a spartan locker up front, got the ZJ front bumper from nates 4x4, should be here in about a week. And I got a smittybuilt 4000 pound winch for it already, I know 4k is a hare small but I don't plan on lifting the thing off the ground, just thru a mud hole or two here an there, the occasional snow bank, an I got a buncha snatch blocks if it comes down to it.

95 ZJ. It's cool. I got this.

Re: ZJ builders

Hi ! I am with you a ZJ lover !
And I thought that there would be lots of Zj enthuiast out there ! But I am with you thinking zjZj are cool.

Although I have 50+ years experience in the motor trade in the past I just stripped them down and rebuilt them ! However when I arrive back in the USA and purchase a ZJ jeep were I am lost this must be my everyday transport but want to do so many mods I hard to known were to start . As my jeep will need a winch bumper and winch 12000 right away as it needs to work logging as well as transport.

However did you change item after purchase like plus, points , distributor, plug leads as I things that's were I should start then bushes bearings and brakes. What your thoughts ????
I would be very interested in knowing

Regards brian

Re: ZJ builders

I did a full tune up right away. Switched to synthetics. Then started on the front axle, which is the Dana 30 on mine. Pulled the 27 spline axles and trashed them, went 30 spline spicer axles with u-joints instead of cv joints. They take more torque. The carrier in the diff had to be changed and while I was in there I dropped in a Spartan hydrolic locker. Inner an outer seals had to go and I went with Detroit hubs. The 30 spline is a larger diameter shaft that won't fit where the 27 spline went without changing everything. The lift was easy. Only wanted a inch but with the added weight of the winch and bumper I installed a 2 inch with new struts and a lowering kit for the transfer case to ease up on the driveline joints. Allow more torque to hit the wheels before I blow something. All in all it works out to a out a inch an a quarter. About as tall as a upcountry model. Tires make it taller tho. Now I've been adding little things like smoked headlights and black emblems. Led tail lights. A visor for over the front windshield. Headlight protectors. Really I'd recommend going with traction/self recovery first. Winch at least strong enough to pull yourself out even if you need to block it. Go limited slip next. Everyone loves air lockers but I'm a Alaska islander and we have 32 miles of road that's usually pretty snotty. Other than that I'm on the trails/service roads which aren't bad because the forest service maintaines them to check the snow pack. My version of not bad means there aren't ruts from 56's all down them. I went hydrolic lockers that lock tighter the more a wheel spins. And still lets me do a 5 point turnaround without binding up. I also went to a sex shop an got a few packs of the 12 gram nitrus oxide canisters and a whip cream cracker. Heat surgical tuning in the oven till it gets real stretchy and slip it over the end of the cracker with the holes in it. Run the tubing they the firewall an to your intake. Then when the time comes an you're wide open an not gettin it done. Give the cracker a twist slowly an give your Pistons a helping hand. Works great on hill climbs just don't open it quick or you need a new motor.

Re: ZJ builders

If you have the Dana 30 front axle it'll be fine with a few upgrades. I recommend the swap to 30 spline shafts. They are a bit bigger an will last longer. And get the truss kit an weld on the gussets. It's faster an easier than swapping to the Dana 44. The Dana 30 and 44 have the same size u joints and spindles which is the part your always gonna blow. If you have joint problems with the d30 then swapping to the d44 isn't gonna help. You'll need to make the full jump to the Dana 60. Which is a average of about 15% more cost than a d44 is to build. And is a true upgrade across the board. Bigger everything.

Re: ZJ builders

ImageUploadedByJeepGarage1428551520.101099.jpggot my black front lights in yesterday. I'll also be taking off all the gold emblems an pinstripes. Changing it all out for black. I almost went with halo lights but decided against it because everyone has those. So I went with these and a hid kit to get gas lights instead of filament bulbs. The marker an turn signals have been swapped for led inserts. For headlights i went high beam/super high beam setup to compensate for the darkend glass.

Re: ZJ builders

Also thinking I'll take all the fins out of the grill and put in expanded aluminum. Add a cowl induction. And I got a novelty liscence plate to go on the opposite side of the receiver as the state liscence plate. I want to stay away from drilling on the bumper cause it's compeletly sealed 2x6 square tube an I don't want it filling with water(I live in a rain forest) so I'll be wrapping it with aluminum diamond plate to I can put screws thru that an have no rust issues and have a plate on both sides of the receiver for symmetry
